Term limits for Senators and Representatives

I completely agree. But I have a few notes to add.

  • limit of two terms (8 years) in each of the main sections. This extends to the state and federal levels.
This does not limit an individual from serving 8 years total. I refer to the limit as 8 in one branch much like the presidency. An example path of a career politician could be as follows:
    4-8 years in state senate
4-8 years in state House of Representatives
4-8 years in mayoral type rolls (governor/ mayor)
    4-8 years in federal Senate
    4-8 years in federal house
    4-8 years presidency.
Totals add up to the following:
(Spending one term in each) 24 - (maxing out service) 48 years.

However, if an individual is convicted with insider trading, kickbacks, other instances of using their political position for monetary gain; they are barred from holding any further political offices in any capacity.

For sure. The career politicians have no idea what their policies do to the country. They should have to live in the America they create not hide in their DC bubble.

I like it and have had an idea for years that makes more pressure on them in the time that they are allowed to make the best decisions for America.

Career politicians is what is wrong in this country. Being able to influence the paths for 30 or more years is not what the founding fathers had in mind.

I concur. After serving 26 years , I receive 50% for 20 years and another 1.5% for each additional year of my BASE pay, no housing, food or clothing allowance that made up a 1/3 of our pay. How is it even remotely fair, our elected officials get 80% after serving a minimum of 5 years . Thats 80% of $160,000. Where as a service member who might have been earning $150,000, would only get 50% of the base salary of $100,000. So the Soldiers retirement is $50,000. Doesn’t seem right at all.

24 year term limit, with an option to buy four years off their term, to retire.

Terms can no longer extend past the age of 60 years old.

There is a strong need to have term limits at a normal career length, no longer or shorter than the average worker.
However, in the world of senators and/or congressional leaders, we have a need for “state secrets” to be protected, and protected WELL against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
However, we do NOT need, 40-50 year politicians, remaining in office, becoming oligarchs.

Yes please.

This is the Single most important change that could be made aside from getting money out of politics. Please MAKE THIS HAPPEN

The entrenchment of politicians allows them greater access to become wealthy while “serving the people.” Civil Servants should not be in office to get rich. Period. Also, insider trading is a huge deal and partly how some of them get rich.

I am 100% behind this. It is time to get rid of these lifers! Also, I would suggest an age limit on how old you can be to serve in Congress. I think 75 is plenty old enough. However, we could require thorough physical and cognitive and emotional exams for Congress members! I stand with this, for sure!

You might want to put that in as a suggested change.

I would set the policy, but it wouldnt let me create it. Please feel free to create the policy, if you can. Thanks!

No more than 10 years!

2 term limits, buy an apartment complex to house Congress. Give them free room and board, but limit their pay to 60-65k a year. If they want to live in their home state, then they can make 80k a year. No engaging in stocks while in office and up to 1 year after leaving office. Goal is to have people in office for the betterment of Americans not themselves. No more going into office and coming out rich.

And I 100% agree with this! It is the unelected ones who are really running things! Term limits for all federal jobs! And get some regular, common sense folks in there. One way, to mitigate costs, is to have plane rides or pay gas for federal servants. Also, provide apartment housing for each member of Congress, all equal and the same!

Term limits will return Congress to the people and make it a service opportunity for younger Americans.

Yes, Senators should be the same as the Congressman 2 years a piece, that lets us know if they are really doing anything for us, if not, we can vote on someone who will work for us. 2 year limits for house and senate!

I’d prefer same term limits for president just like all political offices.

4 year term - 2 maximum

I’d also like an age limit of the max being the retirement age. If we have a minimum age limit there should also be a maximum. I don’t think the founders thought we’d have 80+ year olds in the White House.

35-65 would be a good age range.

I also think they should not make more than the federally minimum wage, they’re supposed to be community servants. They should not be getting rich of tax payer dollars.

Senate terms are way too long. They should be half what they are. Two terms for House reps.

The problem with term limits is two fold:

  1. You have to do a constitutional amendment - wont happen
  2. Even with a Republican majority in the Senate, there are not enough to beat the filibuster.

Term Limits are definitely needed.
Two Terms for Senators … total of 12 years.
Change the term on Congressional Representatives to 4 years because the 2 year terms results in maybe one good year of legislation, but then the second year they are concentrating on their next election.
Representatives 3 terms (if it can be changed to 4yrs) for a total of 12 years.
If the Reps Terms stay at 2-years, then a total of 10 years.
