Term limits and age limits need to be set!
As a retired 2 term city council member, I noticed the first 1-2 years were very much about learning and listening. The remaining years I felt competent enough to actually do my job.
While others may be faster learners (Iâm a bit slow, I admit), it was striking how much time it took to learn the process in order to effectively serve.
That said, there was little more I could do beyond 2 terms. It was time to go back to my family business and pass the baton. Thus I would add:
- Limit elected officials (yes, all elected officials) to 2 terms. The same as the President. If he can do it, so can every other elected official.
Note: I disagree on the age limit (or doing competency tests). Why? Because it wonât even be necessary because the elected official will be limited to two terms anyway. Think about it: No one is going to be a newly elected official at 85 years old, unless theyâre amazingly sharp and if thatâs the case, they deserve to be in for a term. The only officials who are currently in their 80s and 90s are multi-term (life-long) officials, which can be easily solved with two-term limits.
Or if they want a retirement they do like the rest of America and plan for it off of what they are being paid. IRAs, 401k, ect
You would have to make it a National Referandum . Let the people vote on it.
Term Limits should be for SCOTUS, The House of Representatives & The Senate. There should be a single 12 year combined period for term limits. If you serve 4 years in The House and then get elected to the Senate, you should only be able to serve an additional 8 years. Congress will not term limit themselves so there are two options: 1. Accept term limits and current politicians are grandfathered in; 2. A Convention of States to Amend the Constitution to enforce federal term limits.
Term limits are needed to save our country.
We should also have a more streamlined process for recalling terrible representatives, and not just having to wait them out till the next election.
Seeing the same faces from both parties, year after year, indicates their constituents keep voting them back in. Term limits have always been in the hands of the voters. Full disclosure of the money accepted by lobbying groups and a synapsis of their voting record might makes a big difference.
12 years is far too long. 8 max and thatâs only if their policies they vote for donât increase the national debt.
These politicians need a rating system with deficits and policies listed in simple punch list fashion
My number 1 issue here this could solve a lot of the governments problems
No minimum, max should be 10 terms for Representatives, 2 for Senators. Combined max years on the hill would be 32 years on the hill for a single person. More than enough for an effective leader to work the change they want.
Assumption: author meant Maximum of two terms, not minimum?
In that case, YES. CHECK OUT the Convention of States calling for a constitutional convention. Congress will never limit their own longevity, power. The States can do it with an Amendment.
Yes there needs to be public disclosures of the senator or representatives that receives money from lobbyists and how much money. More transparency and regulation of their influence peddling will make a difference.
Absolutely agree. Voting.
Absolutely agree , we need new people in the offices not life long ones , we need people to see that voting people in and out is a good thing , we need to get these life long politicians working for us and not there padding their pockets. Run on your ideas and goals and when you get into office fix the problems or be voted out.
I strongly support this policy. I donât like having career politicians in Congress.
10 years is too long. Make it the same as the President, but 2 year terms.
Annual salary should be equal to median salaries for their constituents. They do better when their community does better.
The current âH.J.Res. 11: Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to limit the number of terms that a Member of Congress may serve.â Reads:
"JOINT RESOLUTION
Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to limit the number of terms that a Member of Congress may serve.
That the following article is proposed as an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which shall be valid to all intents and purposes as part of the Constitution when ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years after the date of its submission for ratification:
â
1.No person who has served 3 terms as a Representative shall be eligible for election to the House of Representatives. For purposes of this section, the election of a person to fill a vacancy in the House of Representatives shall be included as 1 term in determining the number of terms that such person has served as a Representative if the person fills the vacancy for more than 1 year.
2.No person who has served 2 terms as a Senator shall be eligible for election or appointment to the Senate. For purposes of this section, the election or appointment of a person to fill a vacancy in the Senate shall be included as 1 term in determining the number of terms that such person has served as a Senator if the person fills the vacancy for more than 3 years.
3.No term beginning before the date of the ratification of this article shall be taken into account in determining eligibility for election or appointment under this article."
My recommendation would be to rewrite as:
JOINT RESOLUTION
Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to limit the number of terms that a Member of Congress may serve.
That the following article is proposed as an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which shall be valid to all intents and purposes as part of the Constitution when ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years after the date of its submission for ratification:

2.No person who has served 1 term as a Senator shall be eligible for election or appointment to the Senate. For purposes of this section, the election or appointment of a person to fill a vacancy in the Senate shall be included as 1 term.
3.Any term beginning before the date of the ratification of this article shall end 6 years after the date of ratification of this article.
Maximum of two terms in each position, regardless of what position or where. Does not reset if they change states or districts.
A term of 12 years lifetime service in Congress (thatâs total service in House, Senate or an aggregate) would be the least disruptive to the balance of power between the two chambers and fit with existing terms of 2 years for House and Six for Senate, it would also provide a member the ability to serve under at least two Presidents. Career Politianâs, the bane of our system, would become extinct.
