There should absolutely be term limits in place to prevent policy stagnation and shady advantages. We also need to include health in this discussion. Our representatives need cognitive function and healthy minds in order to decide the laws that govern us. There should be a mandatory cognitive test every year to make sure they are capable of the role. You have to have your wits about you and not an assistant whispering in your ear to vote yay or nay.
Piggyback a few more clauses to a Term Limits Amendment:
- Limit campaign finance funding for people seeking office in Congress to citizens of the State they seek to represent and cap it at 10% of the median income.
- No exemptions to any legislation that impacts people in general, ie Obamacare being exempt for members of Congress and special interests.
- Mandate a 3/5 vote in Senate on legislation put forward when thereâs one party rule and during lame duck sessions.
This needs to be done, we canât have politicians thinking that civil service is for life and living from the goverment and try to keep old ideas in a world that keep evolving year after year. It is imperative to ensure this people dont seat in power and feel entitled to it.
Makes sense. In a way, we do have term limits. Itâs called elections! If we had honest elections weâd vote ones out if theyâre not doing right & those who are doing great will continue. Iâd personally love keeping my representative & senator a long time.2024-11-08T06:00:00Z
Yes age limits!!! No one above retirement age would be a start. It should be people who are actually functioning members of society, who will have to return to society. Too many politicians making decisions that they will never have to deal with.
Please get Pelosi out of here!
This will be an impeccable change in our American public service system. I would like to add that in order to promote a healthy democracy, I believe that Senators and Representatives should be subject to term limits similar to those of the presidency. This would help prevent the consolidation of power by long-serving public servants and create opportunities for new leadership to emerge. Limiting consecutive terms would not only ensure a more balanced distribution of power, but also allow for the younger generations to engage with and represent the interests of their peers, fostering greater connection between elected officials and the public they serve.
No, I disagree. Would you want to study, work hard, climb the ladder, to get to a position youâre supremely qualified for, only to be booted out after a limited time for no good reason? Representatives would be motivated to profit while theyâre in office, and will always be looking out for their post-representative career instead of doing the best job while theyâre there. Who takes better care of the residence - renters or owners?
The most qualified candidate should be the one in the position, and given the experience garnered while serving, that is often the one already there. Put it to a vote periodically like we already do, and that serves this goal.
i canât agree to term limits but i would allow the ppl to do aduits on congress who have accumulated money quickly that doesnât make sense to their yearly salaries
correct but i will agree for the public to audit servants of the ppl if their bank account swells up beyond their yearly salaries quickly AOC is a perfect example she has been in congress since 2018
I believe present day sitting Senators and Congressmen that have been in office for longer than 8 years need to be removed, audited and after financially cleared, re-voted for. If not financially cleared, assets frozen, arrested if need be, and/or have taxpayerâs funds refunded. There are far too many career politicians that have lied, cheated and stolen from American citizens.

I believe anyone in a political seat and gets caught in any form of corruption should be forced to publicly announce what they have done, resign and then be charged!
This country has needed this for many years. Please get this passed.
I believe they shouldnât be able to be there longer than a sitting President .
Itâs a long reach, but I agree with everything said in this post. We need to make this an amendment or it will be gone in 60 seconds.
Every elected position should have term limits, period. We also need to do away with the golden parachute for people that served. We the people do not have the benefit of a paycheck for life and insurance for life. We have politicians that use these systems and We the People pay for it while our families struggle. When they are out of office they should be out of paychecks as well.
We also need age limits for the Supreme Court justices. A Supreme Court justice should not be working with a terminal health condition or brain cancer.
Age limit or cognitive tests. I think of Dianne Feinstein being in her 90s and having a medical power of attorney with people telling her to say yay or nay. Thatâs just not acceptable.
How about just abolish the 17th amendment and give control of Senator appointments back to the state legislatures. That way the state elections will make it easier to remove the Senators.
