Term limits for Senators and Representatives

You are absolutely right. Audits I think would be a good tool to not only initial clean-up but for monitoring. Considering the levels of abuse we’re discovering and already know about these regular audits definitely need to be several degrees wide extending to family members and professional associations. Put a stop to the revolving door.

I would take 20 years, in total for all positions. Being President could be 8 years, so that’s about 12 years to move through the ranks to run for president.

I think it would have been helpful to have included what the 17th amendment is in your post.

This would be a great way to turn things back toward what they were meant to be by the founding fathers. They never intended these positions to be a career. You served your country on a per diem basis and then went home to your regular job/life. If you’re babysitting a political position for 30, 40, or 50 years, you’d think you’d be better at it by now than the clowns currently doing the babysitting.

FACTS!!! They should be voted in during election time just like everyone else.

nope the 17th amendment messed this all up. AS senators represent their state in making sure they get equal representation in Foreign affairs its should be the states job to pick and vote on them, and if need be recall them. They do not represent the people at all. the 17th changed that to this → The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.

When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of such State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided, That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.

This amendment shall not be so construed as to affect the election or term of any Senator chosen before it becomes valid as part of the Constitution.

in summer stripping the state of its power over its own senators. people elect them now so money is involved. THIS is the root of the issue not term limits. AND a convention IS DANGEROUS. Why may you ask? simple direct answer is there are no set rules for one. you might end up far worse off then you are now. the states could just end our current federal compact(confederacy of states.) A legal term that comes with the interstate compact. no constutional protections, take over of the states by Foreign interests like the UN,NATO the rich people of the world. The list is endless. ALL RIGHTS ARE natural. making laws to grant rights makes them privilege.

What should really happen with Senators instead is to repeal the 17th Amendment so that Senators are appointed by state legislatures again. Possibly with an additional rule giving the legislatures a limited ability to recall Senators in extreme circumstances (possibly requiring a 2/3rds vote).

Agreed but historically Republicans are just as quick to build up the government as long as you mention the correct words. National defense, freedom, ISRAEL. Let’s not forget who was in control when the PATRIOT Act finally got through. And how very few R’s will vote to stop any part of it.

As a conservative, I am slowly becoming aware that because R’s talk about small govt all the time, I am blind (or make excuses) to all of the ways they too inflate the federal government.

Besides the term limits and not being able to set their own pay increases, can we make it to where they are not paid or have a massive decrease in pay while they are on recesses. Like this last one where they are on a 6 week recess and they left funding issues for the VA and and hurricane relief on the table for when they return. As much as they are paid they need to earn the money like anyone else would, not deadlock and take a month off and then still take weeks to do anything for the people. Also can’t stand seeing clips of some of these elderly officials sleeping while they are trying to go over bills, if you can’t be on top of your game when handling something so important you need to step down.

I am a HUGE FAN of the CONVENTION OF STATES.
This is literally our LEGAL Constitutional roadmap out of this mess.

I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE EVERY AMERICAN TO GET READ UP ON THIS, INVOLVED ASAP AND HELP MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

Many have been working very hard on this already but still so many don’t know about it. WE NEED 34 STATES and we’re only a couple away now.
LET’S DO THIS!

What about selecting representatives similar to jury duty? A friend of mine suggested this might eliminate corruption. Thoughts?

A simple way to put it is, who treats property better, renters or owners? A good read for everyone here would be Hans-Hermann Hoppe’s book “Democracy The God That Failed”

I think there is room to experiment with sortition, for sure. Some people are uncomfortable with the idea of introducing randomness to public decisions, but there are statistical and practical reasons to expect it to be representative - if not more representative than the status quo.

One idea I would like to see some experimentation with is the concept of Election by Jury. A drawback with sorting a proper legislative body directly from among the public is the level of commitment required. There will be a bias for more politically invested people, and activists who get selected to stay, while the average person will tend to decline. If instead, the commitment is relatively short (several days to a week) that’s something the average person won’t mind participating in.

In fact, I have a contribution here, which extends sortition to the Electoral College. To be clear, I don’t think sortition is the answer to everything. It is just one of many available tools to implement a republic.

Or pay for any upgrades THEMSELVES !

YES, please!

This is such a bad idea.
Term Limits would get rid of Rand Paul, Thomas Massie, Matt Gaetz, Chip Roy and so on.
We do not need term limits, we need to reduce the overall distance of power and make elected officials strictly accountable to those they represent.

I discuss this here:

I offer a more descriptive policy proposal here: Enhancing Democratic Accountability: A Policy Proposal for Congressional and Leadership Term Limits

Including an on-ramp for this policy that grandfathers in current congress members so that they are willing to vote against their own self-interests.

I completely agree! Term limits are a crucial step, but I think it should go even further to make sure public office is a true service, not a career path. They should be paid minimum wage, keep a civilian job, and never be allowed to exempt themselves from the laws they pass. No self-approved raises, lifelong salaries, or pensions. Holding office should be about serving the country, not building a political empire.

Term limits lack foresight. They will likely result in consolidating power, and a revolving door system with only pre-selected people able to walk through that door.
I discuss an actual solution that rewards good Governance and dissuades poor representation here Distance to POWER, Power to The PEOPLE
