Pragmatic Plan to Address Illegal Immigration

The optics of the Republican party doing a mass deportation of ALL illegal immigrants could wind up looking unbelievably bad and could easily be used against the GOP in future elections.

From a pragmatic point of view, due to lack of control at our southern border, we now have tens of millions of people here illegally. To round all of them up and deport them against their will would be a herculean, expensive undertaking. So, my proposal is to solve the worst parts of the problem and create a win-win for the rest. Here is my proposal outlined in three main steps:

  1. Seal the Border First. Build the entire wall. Staff it with a veritable army of border patrol and reduce the flood to as close to zero as possible.

  2. Locate all of the people here illegally. How? Offer rewards for info leading to them (the ones we wouldn’t want to stay) or invite them (the ones we would give a chance to stay) to be vetted as in #3 below.

  3. Vet all Illegals. When an illegal is brought into custody (either involuntarily through tip lines/arrest or voluntarily), vet them.

    • Do they have skills to offer the US? A minimum of a H.S. education?
    • Do they test positive for illegal drug use?
    • Are they using their skills/education and working?
    • If working, create a way for them to PAY taxes along with a path to stay in
      the U.S. with strict guidelines (if they commit any crime, or are not paying
      taxes, they are deported at once).
    • After two years of working, paying taxes, and committing zero criminal acts,
      provide them with a path to become a “legal” resident (i.e. green card) and a
      naturalized citizen if they wish. They would need to go to the end of the
      “line” for this behind those who in in the queue already to immigrate to the
      U.S. legally.
    • If a vetted illegal has nothing to offer, is a criminal, ties to gangs, not working,
      uneducated, expecting handouts, deport them at once!

With this plan, these immigrants who are here, have something to offer, and are people we would have “wanted” to let in if they had gone through legal channels, are given a chance to remain here if they are productively “adding” to our country (i.e. paying taxes). Those that don’t fit that profile are deported thereby lessening the risk of crime, etc. It would create a win-win for everyone and the GOP would be seen as fixing the problem caused by prior administrations in a logical, thoughtful, compassionate way!
