Overhaul of CPS

CPS is a destructive entity to families and children.

They are given too much autonomy when it comes to how they handle their cases.

CPS should not be able to enter a home on a complaint and take children and place them into foster care. They should only be able to observe and report findings. From their observations and reports only a judge/magistrate should be allowed to make a decision as to whether children should be separated from their parents. These cases should be considered an emergency and dealt with quickly not weeks or months after the inital findings.

Children should only be sent to foster care if there are no other family members who can take the child/children into their care and the parents should be given a reasonable amount of time to reach out to family members who could take in the children.

Seperation from the parents are hard enough on children, lets not make it harder on them by placing them with strangers.

Like anything, there are good and bad to foster care. Many people do it for the money and many times, cps place the kids and do not do regular check-ins making sure the kids are doing ok. Children seperated from their parents, no matter the situation, need counseling/therapy and do not get it. If CPS did their job right, they would make sure the children were getting the help they need, the foster or extended families were offered the resources needed for the children and to keep the continuity of family.

Nancy Schaefer, (who was once Mayor of Atlanta ,Georgia) researched and wrote a report entitled
“The Corrupt Business of Child Protective Services.”
She had brought to light, through her findings a lot of interesting facts about CPS which should be looked at again.

For families and children who have been affected by CPS and the way they handle things, please consider looking into them .

Many families that send their kids to public school get several notices a year stating that if their kid is absent from school too much, CPS will be called. This is outrageous when the parent has clearly stated a reason for being out. Sick with doctors notes or a family vacation, ect. The kids can do homework online even when they’re out of class. So how is that even considered missing a day, when even their sick days they are doing homework online? CPS being called over missing 2 weeks out of the year is excessive. Some of these illnesses or medical situations take the kids more than a week to heal from. It’s irresponsible to send them to school when they’re not fully healed to get another child sick. Yet apparently doing the responsible thing is grounds for CPS to be called. Since when does taking the kids on a vacation to Florida for a week, warrant CPS involvement? It’s like they think they have the right to take kids away from their happy, healthy, families whenever they feel necessary. Who gave them so much “power”? Our children are not property of the government.

There are thousands of story’s told online about how CPS aided in child trafficking or knowingly placed kids with abusive foster families. CPS needs to be the one heavily investigated and all parties that are not for prioritizing the health and safety of the child first, should be fired and arrested if necessary.

Truancy laws definitely need to be abolished, and evidence shows that it disproportionately affects lower income families (which the agency was created to help and not hurt), it has negative consequences on the students who then fall further behind, it criminalizes the students and the parents, and its ineffective at addressing the underlying issues.

I agree. If children have to be removed they should be placed with family or close to family and people and places they know. Far too many children disappear from fostercare in strange places.

The recent overturning of the Chevron deference removes much of their power, in my first-hand experience they have no business deciding the fate of families, cheers to painting the yellow blood red

Just abolish it. Get the government out of the charity business completely. Any “overhaul” results in states re-wording policies to fit the state’s needs so they can keep operating.

Safe places for children could be set up in each community to give children that do need help a safe place to go, and keeping children in their own community will help reduce the number of runaways and children being sex-trafficked. They are getting lost running away from strangers in strange places. At least, if they are near home, they have a chance of making it to a friend or family member that won’t sex traffick them.
