On the Healthcare dot gov application for Marketplace health insurance, there are 2 pages of optional questions that ask about one’s sex “assigned at birth”, one’s “gender identity”, and one’s “sexual orientation”; these questions are asked about the applicant and about the applicant’s spouse if any. Again, these questions are optional, and DO NOT AFFECT THE APPLICANT’S ELIGIBILITY. So . . . why are they being asked at all? If I’m not mistaken, these questions were added to the application in 2021; the app had gone along just fine without them for years before. I would like to see these questions removed, and the language about “sex assigned at birth” removed as well. These are late-stage identity politics dog-whistles, they are offensive, they elongate an already overlong application, and they are entirely unnecessary.
