I feel uncomfortable with the fact that I always have to state my race and sex on a job application. Throughout an interview, my potential employer is welcome to get to know me, but this should be based more on my qualifications rather than the personal traits I have that cannot be controlled by me.
This goes for all races because, depending on the job you are applying to, they may either be looking for a more diverse group or someone more like them. I feel that limits the amount of jobs you can get hired for based more on how you look rather than how qualified you are or how well you fit in with the group.
As for sexual orientation, I believe we have put way too much weight into this category. Fighting for “equal” rights has turned into a “look at me” campaign. I don’t understand why this is on a job application now except to prohibit someone from obtaining a job based solely on this. It shouldn’t be important and it shouldn’t be something that is even discussed on a professional level. If someone doesn’t match who you would like in the position once you meet for an interview, that is one thing. But don’t judge before giving a qualified person a chance.
This is coming from someone who strongly disagrees with certain people becoming teachers in schools (those that want to push sexual idealistic onto kids), but you can still wait until an interview to determine if a person is a good fit regarding those areas.
A job application should be based around qualifications, experience, schooling, and resume/cover letters. NOT how a person looks or who they are attracted to.
