Even the most expensive health insurance policies do not cover enough of the costs associated with labor and delivery leaving families with large bills to pay back to the hospital. For example, I pay over $1600/month for a FL Blue policy, had a extremely easy and quick labor and delivery (2 night stay as REQUIRED by my hospital) and STILL owe $5,000.
We are currently facing a crisis with our declining birth rate. Part of the decline can be contributed to the costs associated with labor and delivery.
Agreed! I had insurance with my first son but had to end it with my second since I left the company that offered it and it was too expensive on my own. My 2nd L&D was probably around AT LEAST $25,000 for self-pay. It was $6,000 for the anesthesiologist bill alone & he didn’t know what he was doing and now I have permanent damage on my spine from the epidural. I had complications from preeclampsia and the medical bills are overwhelming. This would be so helpful for families who can’t afford health insurance.
