Policy Proposal: Veterans Disability Claims
Objective:
To have the Department of Veterans Affairs to be held accountable for veteran’s claims. Also to hold the Veterans Administration to a higher standard when a veteran APPEALS a decision.
Key Elements of the Policy:
- Veterans Administration Overwatch
- Veterans will have the authority to check in REAL time as to the status of their claim.
- Veterans Administration must provide accurate and verifiable information.
- Veterans Administration must resolve all appeals within 180, no more endless remands.
- Interim claim status:
- Veterans seeking an increase in their ratings will get 100% disability during the claims process. Once the claim is settled, the new percentage is the current paid level.
- This policy applies to all veterans seeking an increase.
- Implementation
- The Veterans Administration will update the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), to reflect a more veterans friendly Department.
- Monitoring this policy should involve a group of legal experts, Veterans Administration, and veterans from various parts of the country.
- Benefits to Veterans and Society
- Economic: The money saved by streamlining the appeals process will save billions in the long run. Plus, more veterans will enjoy a better life.
- Societal Improvement: The money that the veterans receive will be a boon to the economy. Currently, veterans contribute about $125 BILLION as of 2022.
- Mental Health: Simply put, veterans who get their disability claims settled sooner can enjoy a better life overall. This equates to less trips to the hospital, less stress, and stability.
- Cost and Funding Considerations
- The primary expenses will of course come from the taxes paid. Let’s not fool ourselves here.
