The federal government directs hundreds of billions of dollars each year to non-profits and other entities in the firm of grants. Once taxpayer funds leave control of the government, however, there is no further accountability for how the money is spent. Also there are no criteria on how the grants are awarded.
This lack of transparency & accountability continues despite claims from reputable sources that money goes to groups /firms owned by post donors as well as friends and family of congressional leadership. The same groups then donate to the campaigns of the party and individual legislators.
Furthermore, it is alleged that the groups perform activities that the federal government may not have authority or permission to do (examples too numerous to list)
If these NGOs &c. are required to itemize their expenditures for the IRS, it is asking very little to have that she data provided to congressional accounting office and they, in turn, to the public. Freedom of Information is due the public also if there entities spend our money or further policies directed by those in office.
