Once as a great nation we recognized the mentally ill and treated them so they wouldn’t be a burden on society or themselves.
Transgender, non binary identifying people are mentally ill and need special treatment so they won’t hurt themselves or negatively influence children.
Reopen the asylums to treat the mentally ill members of our society.
Many of these institutions where corrupt and did many things that were horrible. This along with the old school “Chain gangs” from the penal system way back. Should in my opinion be reconsidered and how to do it properly.
To many people look at how wrong both of these were when they were in operation. Not what they were granting. We should be looking how to take these lessons and improve upon them. Not disregard them all together.
We understood these people needed help. This should continue and be looked at by those in the industry as how to help them without creating such a negative space as we once did.
This is one of the most sane ideas I’ve read in a long time.
A lot of institutions were corrupt, and that’s ultimately the people’s responsibility. It was a good idea and it worked, until the democrats made problems, just as they did with the forestry, making wildfires more abundant, and stopping the cops from protecting the public and criminalizing the victim.
The work was deliberately compromised to manipulate the people. Because we were disconnected, separated. Taught to ‘never talk politics’ … because we would take sides and mass against those that sought to control us. Because if we did, we would find our strength together.
We are more connected than ever and together, we can ensure corruption never perverts a good idea.
It’s the same thing as chain gangs and KKK. They pushed everything to be racist and corrupt.
I agree and the “homeless” are really people addicted to drugs, are violent and dangerous to society and themselves, and unable to care for themselves. Leaving these people to survive on the streets is cruel and merciless because they do not have the mental skills to do so and they suffer. Reopening asylums would be the best solution for these people and would help them in so many ways: medications given consistently on time, bathrooms for their needs and cleanliness, sufficient diets for their health and once that is established, many of these people could work in the asylum, even growing some of their food, cleaning, working in and around the institution itself and by doing so regain self-confidence and contribute to the cost of their care. Just like all institutions, the asylums would have to be closely monitored to prevent abuse and neglect, but that has been done in the past and can be done again.
I would add the orphanages should be opened again to protect children and give them a permanent place to live. Obviously, the orphanages have to be carefully monitored to prevent abuse, but orphanages have been very successful in the past and society owes innocents protection. That is a moral duty. Orphanages are far better and safer places than “foster homes” where children are often neglected and moved around so often. Children need a place they call “home” where they are secure, fed, and educated, and connected to each other. Orphans should also be allowed to stay until they are 21 to 25, but must work to help support the orphanage during that time, or be able to stay through college graduation. Offering that would help produce citizens who make society better and can be self-sufficient. It is cruel to do otherwise.
Bring back the “poor house” and/or “work farm” concepts, with more compassionate goals. It seems rather inhumane to allow people to live on the streets.
Create a better public/private partnership to give people a warm, dry place to sleep and bathe. Mental health services, drug addiction counseling, job assistance and training information should be available to those willing to improve their condition.
