Private health insurance - get US govt and employers out of the insurance business

We should start paying for health insurance like we pay for car insurance. No government subsidies or Medicare/Medicaid because government involvement is causing inefficiencies, not to mention the US debt is out of control. Hospitals and doctors charge more because they know they can get away with it. Health insurance should not be tied to employment either because when folks lose their jobs, they lose health insurance and cobra premiums are not affordable. If employers didn’t have to pay for employee health insurance, they could pay workers more or hire more people. If Americans had to shop for health insurance, the health insurance market would be competitive. Annual health insurance premiums could be tax deductible or money can be taken out of paycheck to pay for health insurance premiums. Health insurance companies should be regulated so that they have to take on a certain percentage of high risk applicants including the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, and the companies can reward healthy patients with lower premiums. Cover natural and holistic doctors/medicine and gym memberships to keep people healthy so that there are less claims to be paid out. No income taxes on retirement accounts so that elderly have money to pay for their health insurance premiums. State subsidies only in certain cases for the poor, etc. in return for community service.

My biggest concern is today health insurance companies already practice medicine without a license preventing needed care, delaying needed care, not covering needed medications, requiring preauthorization by non doctor staff, and ever increasing copays and caps.

I think there should be regulations surrounding the health insurance industry so they can not engage in the practices you mention. If health insurance and medical care were privatized without subsidies, the health insurance companies would have to make their plans attractive to the consumer. There should also be incentives for doctors and hospitals to not do unnecessary procedures. I don’t have all the answer for what this looks like, but our current system is not working and government debt is skyrocketing.
