The US government has become so infatuated with itself that it is no longer a representative of the collective voice of the American people. We are no longer heard, even with the rise in social media. Don’t believe me? Reply with your most thoughtful response to any US politician’s post on X - they will never respond unless you have influence or you’re famous. I guarantee it.
Therefore, I would like to propose a national polling system called V.O.I.C.E. (Voter Opinion Initiative for Citizen Engagement)
This system would work as follows:
- Right after a citizen votes, they are eligible to be opted in and registered into the V.O.I.C.E. system automatically. From that point, they can either access V.O.I.C.E through their web browser or an app. The voter now has lifetime access. The user can opt out any time.
- Right before any bill is signed into law, the app would notify all V.O.I.C.E. users with a simple question: Should Bill XYZ be signed into law? The options would be yes, no, or undecided. There would also be a text box for people to write an optional opinion about the bill and how to improve it.
- V.O.I.C.E. would then record all responses in real-time so that every public servant representing us can see exactly how we feel about the bill as a whole.
- The President and Congress can see how we all feel and then decide whether or not they should sign the bill into law or veto.
- Results can be streamed to social media platforms like X and Facebook in real-time for everyone to see, and traditional media outlets can use the results for talking points, which will bring more attention to each bill.
Not only will V.O.I.C.E. be a conduit for our voices to be heard, it will also inspire people to register to vote in order to gain access to the system so that their voices can be heard too. New features can be built in over time.
Please note: V.O.I.C.E. will never have any “official” capacity, but it would just serve as an unofficial feedback tool to help our elected representatives make better informed decisions about every bill.
