Make School Lunches Edible Again

Rethink how we feed the children in school.

Give the children more choices. In my grandchildrens school they get a choice between : (sample)

A. Drumstick, fries, carrot sticks and milk
Or
B. PBJ sandwhich fries and milk.

Many times my granddaughter comes home hungry because choice A is just not appetizing to look at ( anyone with children know that they wont eat anything that looks “gross”)
Or actually tastes bad so they never pick that certain meal when its served again .
She will choose choice B more times during the week then the other.
I understand there are budgets but when it comes to children, shouldnt we put more into the meals they need to eat to keep them going, learning and participating through the day?
Not to mention the amount of children who ONLY get a full meal at school because the family doesnt have enough funds for groceries at home. So why not make these meals better and more fulfilling?

Add meatballs to the spaghetti and a decent slice of garlic bread and a side salad.
Or (2) chicken filet sliders with mac and cheese and fruit kabobs

A single sad looking drumstick is not enough for some kids.

For breakfast why not cheesy eggs, sausage/bacon and fruit
Or omelets with a couple of hot cakes and fruit.

Have a day where foods from other countries are offered.

Also, since some of these kids go home to little to no food, allow them to take what they dont eat home.

Its crazy that nutrition isnt a major concern for school aged children.

Did you see when RFK jr was announced in charge that On Tuesday, Kraft Heinz shared that it is pulling its Lunchables products from a program providing free and reduced meals to low-income school children across the U.S. Wonder why…they know they were not healthy for our kids.

I am so glad you posted this as I have been having a similar issue with my grandchildren. Since COVID our county provides free breakfast and lunch to all children. Breakfast consist of poptarts, cinnamon rolls, cereals and other sweet packaged foods. Save the milk there are no protein options. The food breakfast choices are high fat, high sugar with very little nutritional value. I feel sorry for the poor teachers who get a sugared up child every morning.
