Increase Protein for Public K-12 School Lunches

Protein intake is a important part of building muscle and making kids more healthy. No, I’m not saying kids need to become bodybuilders at a early age, but a increase in how much protein is served in school lunches will make kids more full (In a healthy non-fattening way), builds muscle and bone strength (Bone strength is important at a early age), improve blood pressure and metabolism, and even help kids lose weight (Which is a epidemic in our society).

Obesity is higher than ever and is a disease, adults have the right to choose what they eat and how much they weigh, but there should never be a kid that is obese, for any reason. Michelle Obama’s school lunch policy had the right heart but horrible execution and results. We should not be limiting how much kids should eat, but rather help make what they are eating more healthier. An increase in protein, fruits, vegetables, certain carbs, etc. will have significant positive effects on our children.

I propose that public school lunches see a 25-75% increase in the amount of protein in any given lunch. A increase in vegetables and fruits is also welcomed. And a reevaluation of the types of carbs served in lunches (Include more rice, beans, natural carbs and less processed carbs such as chips and tortillas)

I work in a school and agree with more protein. However, we need to get rid the the food pyramid that every public school follows, along with adding better nutrients.
