Make elections fair again

The election process as it is does not allow people to vote for the candidates they actually prefer additionally, senate and house members rarely are able to represent their constituents due to them representing such a varied group of people.

The first thing that could help this issue would be making presidential elections non-winner take all state by state (if 40% of California’s votes go to trump then 40% of their electoral college votes should go to him as well) this would make every single state important in the election and especially mid size states where individual voters have more power than voters in other states. I would also expand the electoral college to 1,001 electors to make them much more granular state by state and odd so there is no chance of an electoral tie. It would also make sense to have non-first past the post elections (meaning a candidate would need a majority of electors in order to win and not a plurality) so if the election ended with 450 electoral votes for Trump, 400 votes for Harris and 150 votes for third party candidates the candidate with the least amount of votes would be removed and their votes would go to the voters 2nd most preferred candidate until someone reaches 501 electoral votes.

Senators today are supposed to represent 3.1 million people on average which seems difficult at best, and house members represent around 750,000 people each. If we increase the amount of senators per state to 3 and the total about of representatives to 1,500 they would be able to better represent their constituents and gerrymandering would be nearly impossible in the federal government, you would also get representatives from different political ideologies, ones that match their constituency perfectly.

There also needs to be reform for campaigns, we need to limit super pacs and cut the amount corporations can donate. Citizens United vs FEC has really damaged the state of our democracy, I would even go as far as to say federal campaigns should be funded by the us government.

Every election cycle should have 3 presidential debates and a primary debate if the candidate is from a major party, they would qualify for the first debate by either their party receiving 1% of the presidential vote in the last three elections or by getting 2% nationally in a poll. The first debate would be much longer (maybe 4+ hours) because of the additional candidates. The second debate would only have the top 5 candidates from the first debate or whoever the top 5 candidates are in the poll and the final debate would take place 1 month before the election and only include anyone getting ~25% of the national polls likely only 2-3 people. Everyone who was in the first debate would be put on every state’s ballot unless they drop out. This would basically turn the presidential debates into a primary race for the presidency.

Lastly but certainly not least In order to vote in a federal election you should need a state issued I.D. And voting would take place on a national holiday
