I have just recently become a SS recipient. I was told when either myself or my spouse were to pass basically the state would confiscate their remaining SS payments. I understand SS is virtually bankrupt through government mismanagement however, we’ve paid in our whole lives and I do not feel it morally correct for the government to steal our money. Many people rely on both SS checks to even survive or stay in their homes. So when one spouse dies it creates a huge hardship on the remaining spouse. I understand due to the mismanagement of SS maybe SS cannot pay100% to the remaining spouse but surely they can at least pay a percentage of the deceased spouses SS check to the surviving spouse to maintain their lifestyle. If both the husband and wife had seperate bank accounts would the bank be allowed to confiscate the deceased spouses balance on that account? Of course not. So why does the Government feel they have the right to confiscate what we have paid into SS when we pass? They mismanaged our money, why should we pay for that?
