Insurance Reform Needed

I’ve grown up around healthcare and am marrying a doctor. Too many times I’ve heard complaints that insurance companies dictate how doctors should care for patients. In no way should an insurance company tell a doctor how to do their job. They go to school for many years to learn their profession and know infinitely more about medicine than an insurance representative or claims adjuster. An example I’ve heard several times: patient needs an MRI to diagnose an issue but the insurance company won’t pay for an MRI until after a CT scan has been completed. Doctors know what is best for patients most of the time and policies like this subject those patients to unnecessary testing.
Along the same lines is that insurance should never be able to determine which drug is best to treat symptoms. In my opinion if the doctor orders a test or prescribes a medicine the insurance company should never have the ability to say no/not cover the procedure or drug.
