Our seniors are facing challenging financial times including high costs for healthcare and assisted living leaving them with nothing to pass to their next of kin. With increases in cost of living they can’t even afford proper housing. They should not have to worry about health costs in their senior years.
They give a cola every year and take 60 % for medicare which people cannot use because the 20 % is outrageous
Then lower the cost of healthcare for everyone not just seniors. My husband’s doctor wanted to put him on semaglutide tablets that would cost us $3000 per month and we are still 15 years from getting Medicare. Semaglutide injections for a month are close to $1000. Semaglutide is used for diabetes and now for weight loss. That is just one example and its for a common disorder. Medications for pulmonary fibrous can be over $100,00 a month. Thankfully mom was able to get the medications free after hassling the pharmaceutical company, but her Medicare insurance would not even touch it. What about a younger person without Medicare?
Sounds like you want universal health care
I don’t believe in universal health care but do feel we have an obligation to take care of our elderly. As most are on fixed incomes, we should provide a solution that gives them care of their choice, including facilities needed for long-term care without the burden of how they will pay for it. Hope that helps clarify.
How is this not taken care of by Medicare already? My personal take is that unless you completely make healthcare universal you will cause healthcare costs to increase. For instance, making health care free for elderly will make yours and my healthcare more expensive. Why? Because they will recoup costs however necessary. We saw this with Obama care. Make insurance mandatory to end pre existing conditions, our premiums increased. As long as health care insurance is publicly traded, they will make sure to get their money back. Eliminate publicly traded insurance companies and make health care universal. Learn from Obama mistakes.
Some years they take it all. Additionally the COLA is not fair. inflation was 9.1% at start of year but is based on the October number which was approx. 2.9% and that is what we got. It would be appropriate imo to have a different Cola for seniors that better reflect our circumstances.
Good point. That is the only way to fix this mess. Private insurance costs way more than it should due to Medicare. Both Medicare and Medicaid pay less than the cost of providing service. As a result private insurers pay 2x or more than Medicare to cover the losses (Kaiser Foundation). It takes 3 privately insured people to pay for 1 on public insurance. A universal plan that excludes the negative effects of Medicare would reduce pvt. insurer costs 40%.
As an expert in this field I assure you things work quite differently than the public thinks they do. Insurers always get their money back because the law says so. Premiums are set by insurance depts. not the insurer. Premium $'s are split 85/15 claims vs, overhead. Profits, if any only come from overhead. A premium increase means the claims $'s have been overspent and without it no more claims will be paid. Obama care and traditional insurance is apples and oranges comparison. Universal system IS the answer for 100’s of reasons the public and congress will never understand.
The only thing ‘universal’ about socialized ‘Universal Healthcare’ is how miserable it makes everyone.
Why not??? Universal healthcare is the only way to lower costs and increase access for everyone including you.
I’m sorry. You have the wrong understanding of the term socialized. However to the point you are trying to make…what makes you think the gov’t has to have direct involvement in a universal system???
Complex issue with many sides.
