Can we do something about food waste? I see countless companies throwing away perfectly good food. It would be nice to see more companies donating to food pantries and shelters.
I agree, farm surplus is left to rot in the field, grocery store surplus is tossed out in the dumpsters. What if, instead, we had an initiative to leverage freeze-dry technology to preserve that food before it goes bad.
The freeze-dried food could then be purchased by the government and stockpiled to use:
- Emergency food supplies for domestic disaster relief
- Foreign food aid
- Social safety net (replace EBT program)
- Regular use of the preserved food by food assistance programs like this will help make sure it is high quality and ready for emergency use as well, may also help offset the cost of implementing the program by repurposing funds allocated for other food aid
- Space exploration (ship it to Mars colony some day maybe)
- Sell back to the market domestically or to other contries
