National Food Storage

I propose that the following 9 policy proposals, about eliminating food waste from grocery stores, farms, and restaurants, get merged:

Explanation & Justification

  • Policy #1 is more detailed than policy #2, which is an observation.
  • Policy #1 also is similar to Policy #3, but more detailed suggestions, although the inclusion of food waste from restaurants being eligible is worth keeping in the merge.
  • Policy #1’s inclusion of freeze dry technology provides a solution useful to the proposal in Policy #4 to make the logistics of using food that would otherwise spoil before it can go bad.
  • Policy #5 is broader in scope, but may synergize with the proposals in Policy #1; honestly, not sure which should be primary, but I feel a merge here may be beneficial
  • Policy #1 is more detailed about how to handle the logistics of getting the food preserved and available for use without spoiling (freeze drying) than is provided in Policy #6.
  • Policy #7 is similar in that it aims to reduce food waste, but Policy #1’s inclusion of freeze drying increases the potential use of the food. I the two proposed policies could be synergized by encouraging the sale of b-grade crops and the freeze drying of the remainder that retailers refuse to purchase from the farmers.
  • Policy #8 is very detailed and not an exact match to what Policy #1 proposes, however, there is good synergy here, specifically with the part about food donation, which would benefit from the use of freeze dry technology to improve the scope of what can be achieved before the food spoils
  • Policy #9 is also very well thought out and may be better as the primary for the merge. Policy #1 synergizes well with it because, again, it provides a solution for the unaddressed logistical problem of using the food before it spoils by freeze drying it.

The main reason I am emphasizing Policy #1 is because without the use of freeze dry technology, the other proposals somewhat ignore a major root cause of the food waste, that being the logistics of getting it to someone who wants it before it spoils.
