Citizenship for Veterans

We should not have men and women who serve in our military be deported from the country they fought for and gave their life to for over 4 years. Anyone who is not a natural born or naturalized citizen who serves a full term in the military and leaves with an honorable discharge, should be granted full citizenship. If they are willing to die for this country, they should be given the freedoms and rights they fought for. There should be a minimum amount of years served, beyond the normal 4. All non citizen veterans who are honorably discharged from the military should be given the choice to start the naturalization process immediately after leaving. This would not change the process to become a citizen, but their service would be taken into account during the process.

To gain citizenship through military service in the United States, a person must serve honorably in the armed forces for at least one year as a lawful permanent resident; this is referred to as “peacetime naturalization” and allows them to apply for citizenship after completing that service period.

OK, I don’t have a problem with this, but it should be at least eight year term and four years after that background checks clean record no convictions no misdemeanors also, I want to add onto this veterans. All veterans should be given free housing free utilities for life. No veteran should be left on the street guaranteed transportation to and from their appointments and no appointments over two weeks. We need to put the veterans at the top of the list. I am not a veteran

Thank you for your comment. I 100% agree on the housing and services for veterans. We should not have anyone who served living on the streets. I would also add robust mental health services for veterans who come back from deployment or active duty combat.

As far as the timeframe, I agree 2 full terms for full citizenship is enough, but I do not agree on extending that timeframe. The naturalization process alone covers vetting and good behavior and takes years to complete. I do however feel a veteran should not have to pay the citizenship fees or it should be discounted in honor of their service to the country.

I am not a veteran, but my father and every male going back to the 1800’s in my family have served.

Lawful permanent resident is not the same as a naturalized citizen. Residency can be revoked, but citizenship is permanent unless someone decides to denounce it. We still have veterans who served in Vietnam and never got full citizenship.

We shouldn’t be allowing non-citizens to serve in the military. People should first have to become citizens before they’re allowed to serve in our military.
