Campaign Funding for all politicians

Continuing the discussion from Ban George and Alex Soros:

I think we should prohibit politicians from getting funds from any business or individual. This would keep them from having to repay favors once elected. Instead once on the ballot then they get a fixed sum from the government whether Democrat, Republican or Independent. This would also allow any citizen to run for office, not just the wealthy.

Great idea; level the playing field so that voters are electing representatives instead of politicians

Several friends and I have kicked this idea around for a few years now. Our conclusion was:

  1. A fixed amount would be allocated with up to 40% of that amount could be used in a primary election.
  2. If the candidate won their primary they would be eligible to use the remainder for the general election.
  3. If the candidate lost the primary the remaining amount would be placed in a fund to be used in future elections.
  4. all campaigning would be subject to time constraints; 45 days for the primary and 30 days for the general election. All other time periods would quiet time - no campaign signs, tv or radio adds, etc.
  5. No PACs or SuperPACs would be allowed to contribute funds or services to any candidate nor could they “volunteer” air time or billboard space.
  6. Any candidate who violated these terms would be barred from public office for life.

Some of this sounds like we would be limiting free speech but this is not so - anyone can stand on a street corner and hand out fliers supporting a candidate of their choosing during “primary season” or “election season”, they just can’t go on mass media and bombard the public with lies and propaganda for prolonged periods as they can today.
