Pass a balance budget amendment. Never again should the federal government be allowed to put the American people into $35 trillion of debt.
Never again said, the federal government be allowed to destroy the value of the mighty dollar thereby destroying the prosperity of the American people.
I fully agree with you, we’d need to put an actual proposal together that sets expectations. While also allowing for debt in the event of wars or natural disaster. There should also be an expectation of when it needs to be completed by. As youd have to stop this government shut down B.S. they use against each other to pass junk.
Yes, and as an incentive. No sitting congressman may run for reelection if the budget is not balanced during current term.
I take a slightly different approach, no balanced budget by the start of the fiscal year, pay cut for the entire fiscal year (and strict measures to keep them from undoing the pay cut). See my detailed post:
DEAR SANTA: I want to see an executive summary on the first page of the budget showing where every penny is going – i want the president to have line item veto power – i want to have a deadline for the budget requests in JULY – not at the 24th hour and causing a CR (continuing resolution).
Agree totally. The best way to achieve this is to prohibit funding of any/ALL legislation and federal government departments that are not constitutionally sanctioned.
Unless the Constitution permits the federal government to be involved in respective legislation and/or the activities of many federal government departments it/they shall not be funded.
Unless we return to strict, limited, federal governance we will continue to increase federal government spending which will increase the federal deficit and we will end up on the ash heap of previous world powers who went bankrupt, a distant memory of the past.
If the US would default on its debt, the 20% being paid in annual interest would asure a balance budget. The US has done it four times in the past and in 1933 SCOTUS by a 5-4 vote decided a sovereign (like the US) could default - if it chose to. Do it.
If we default that causes a huge problem world wide. Would also probably send the country and its residents to poverty.
