Uniform Traffic Laws Across All States
The Department of Transportation proposes the standardization of key traffic laws across all states to ensure consistency, improve road safety, and enhance the efficiency of traffic management nationwide. This policy will unify regulations concerning move-over laws, zipper merging, and left-lane passing rules.
Under this policy, all states will adopt a uniform set of traffic laws that includes:
- Move-Over Laws: Drivers will be required to move over one lane or slow down when approaching any vehicle stopped on the roadside with emergency or hazard lights on.
- Zipper Merge: During lane closures, drivers must use both lanes of traffic until reaching the defined merge area and then alternate turns merging into the open lane, like the teeth of a zipper coming together.
- Passing Left Lane Laws: The left lane on highways will be designated primarily for overtaking or passing slower-moving traffic. Continuous driving in the left lane without passing will be discouraged and regulated.
This initiative will reduce confusion among drivers who travel across state lines, promote safer driving practices, and facilitate smoother traffic flow on roads and highways. By ensuring that drivers have a consistent set of expectations and rules regardless of the state in which they are driving, we can decrease the rate of traffic incidents and improve overall road safety.
Implementation will involve an education campaign, updated road signage, and collaboration with state law enforcement to ensure that these standardized laws are understood and enforced consistently across the country. This policy represents a crucial step towards a more organized and safer driving environment for all Americans.
