USā€™ founders in ā€œThe Federalist Papersā€ laid out the context
that is precedent for USā€™ Constitution, according to courts.
As such it reveals what the founders intended, and wisdom they had. This discussion was had 'round the nationā€™s founding, so we should know it as literacy of the ideas weā€™ve inherited.
[ We would do well to restore and fulfill intents that we agree with. ]

In 72, Alexander Hamilton presents the issues about term limits, that show they are illegal, and bad ideas.
https://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/fed72.asp

There are various issues that are presented - itā€™s well worth reading.

One is incentives, because if terms are limited, people in office will feel entitled to look out for their future after their tenure - rather than practice the actual job at hand as much as they can. Without term limits, the incentive is to be doing the best jobā€¦ as such remaining in the position longer / harmoniously. Having term limits means that they need to profit during that time-frame, and will maximize their own personal profit as much as they can. [ Like in the bible ā€˜one cannot serve two masters, itā€™s God or Mammon.ā€™ ]

What does make more sense is votes about confidence to call elections. If thereā€™s term limits ā€˜special interest groupsā€™ will simply take over. They do not solve problems, they actually make them worse, and famously so. Theyā€™re no solution, and those who are supporting them may be worthy of some investigation to resolve their afflictions in sensible ways - such as by helping them to understand why they arenā€™t good ideas.

I think that we should allow three six-year terms for senators, and maybe three four-year terms for the house.

Their current model clearly needs to be adjusted, but Iā€™m not sure that super short tenures (<10 years) is the right answer. Too much possibility for corruption in a totally different direction.

2 terms for senators, 12 years and 4 terms for reps, 8 years.

Campaign funding from individuals only, no pacs, corps, etc with cap of $1000 per contributor.

The original colonial representatives were selected from the community where they lived and then that body would send delegates to national conventions (ie Constitutional Convention). It was expected that there would be no permanent political class. Representatives served their term and returned to theirs farms, shops, homes. As the republic grew more politicians were created and it grew into a popularity contest.

I suggest a regional/national lottery be instituted to select a percentage of the congressional representatives from citizens. They would go to the state and national capitals, serve their pre-determined term and then return home. Much like jury duty but better paid.

4 years, for both senate and congress! This is a learning experience for people to be and learn a part of the process!

Yes

I think it should be no one under 40 and over 65 should be able to hold federal office. This helps ensure that our politicians have had ā€œrealā€ working experience and that we arenā€™t being governed by people that should have retired decades ago.

Governing was NEVER supposed to be a profession !! It always ends up with corruption.

Three things are needed. Term limits of 12 years in Congress for Representatives, session limits to end the permanent meeting, and the repeal of the 17th Amendment.

NO MINIMUM term at all, you can be remove at any time. Just like the executive branch, Maximum 2.5 terms for Congress! As for ALL the Judges: Max 20 Accumulative years of service as a Judge.

Phase in the start over 20 years so the current old buggers wonā€™t block it.

Part of the problem is the staffers also have no term limits and often switch around to other senators/reps.

Can it be done as a ballot initiative and voted on by the people only to be repealed by vote.

Term limits would prevent once in a lifetime good politicians from staying in office as long as their constituents want them. They could also disincentivize long term projects that require long periods of continuous relationships and effort. It would diffuse responsibility by making transitions more frequent. Finally it would incentivize robbing us as quickly as possible since they know they have limited time to accomplish the theft.

Staffers must also have term limits.

I think we should allow 20 years total service in Congress.
-20 yrs is basically one generation
-allows for experience to develop and for organized succession planning and transitions of power
-long enough to allow experience to develop but not so long that we continue the system of rule by career politicians

Politicians, if re-elected and new term would exceed 20 years part way through, should be allowed to finish final term
