How about we also have the senators be elected by the State Legislators once again – as that was the original intention in the constitution. I can’t believe the states gave up that right. It would help curb them from being elected by large money donors in the biggest states influencing the elections in the smaller states.

I agree should be around 10 to 12 years.

While I agree that the terms should be shortened, the key is to place limits on the maximum number of years someone can serve consecutively. I would be in favor of imposing a limit of 2-3 terms max for any elected official.

Take away the lifetime salaries and the protection from prosecution for illegal activity and the attraction will go way down to be a lifetimer. Also make them abide by the same laws they pass for us.

For those of us who don’t know…here’s the website for information on what they are working towards.

Agreed!

This needs to include a ban on board seats or positions at companies with government contracts after leaving Congress.

Disagree: As with any other profession, Senators and Representatives often get better at their jobs with experience and it is desirable to keep the ones who are serving their constituency best in office for as long as they are productive and supported by the voters in their district. Additionally, seniority in Congress often results in appointment to key committees and chair-positions that confer benefits to the states those congressional members represent, such as priority for public works funding.

While I strongly agree that this will eliminate many career politicians, it may also delete many of the GOOD politicians that truly want to help.

Perhaps a limited campaign for any SECOND term incumbent nominees (assuming we win 2024 and don’t lose Free Speech) will bring opposing viewpoints more to the forefront than any accepted rhetoric (that I also believe will die down if we win).

It’s a discussion that needs a deeper dive

term limits for every single government paid job.

I appreciate the goal of term limits, but I don’t like the idea that if we finally get a decent person in office, they’ll get forced out. It does serve as a decent “lesser evil,” though.

Part of me wonders if injecting uncertainty into election cycles would help. Making every other Congressman a lame duck seems like a bad idea, but what if they didn’t know when an election would happen? It sounds insane and is likely unworkable, but what if every August we rolled the dice to see if congressional elections should take place that year? Tweak formulas/thresholds to make it more likely that Senate terms are longer, but ultimately your “two terms” could be anywhere from two to theoretically unlimited years in total length. You just never know when your next election is until a few months out, so the incentive becomes to just do a good job until whenever the election gets called.

2 years is better

Either that or an age limit.

It needs some tweaking, but yes, this is very important.

Its time to put an end to career politicians. Their commitment should be to the American people not to line their pockets

I’ve given careful consideration to this topic and have had discussions with friends and family about it as well. The general consensus is that our country suffers from the stagnation of career politicians and shortened term limits and a maximum threshold of service is required.

For state representatives - I advise that a 3 year term is sufficient for the needs of their respective states, with a cap of 3 terms totalling no more than 9 years, whether consecutive or broken.

For state senators - Due to their national and international policy making they require sufficient time to acquire the experience to engage with foreign negotiators in adopting accords that are in America’s best interests. They will often sit across from foreign agents with decades of experience. For this reason I recommend a 5 year term with a cap of 3 terms totalling no more than 15 years, whether consecutive or broken.

For president - The 4 year term seems sufficient, however, the equivalency of service should allow for cap of 3 terms as well, totalling no more than 12 years, whether consecutive or broken.

Finally, no elected official to the Federal government shall accumulate more than 30 years of total service. Should an elected official find that their continued service not allow for the completion of a full term during an election cycle, then they are to be considered ineligible to run again for Public office.

Doesn’t that give too much power to the state legislature? Could they be more easily corrupted to vote for the senator who’s made sweetheart deals or bribes?

I suggest limit to
ONE term for Senate &
TWO terms for Congress
unless agree to FULL financial/assets
AUDIT of self/spouse/family etc &
a constant publicly posted update of all campaign contributions (w/ direct & indirect ‘hidden parent co.s’ , Lobbyists etc)

This way the few who actually are working FOR the PEOPLE can keep their job if they’re doing it WELL with no conflicts of interest

There’s no reason to get rid of really good people – it’s just hard to believe that they’re actually out there After what we’ve been put through.

Need to get rid of brown paper bags

Our new Republic will only have 2 year terms of people voted by the people. No attorneys unless common law.
Farmers, housewives, electrician, nurses, etc may serve. We the people.
