Term limits for Senators and Representatives

While I support age and term limits. I would also like it so that they cannot move to another position say for at least 30 years in government (Federal and State). Kick them back to the private sector. This will not allow them to just move around and change their titles enabling them to become career politicians. So after their term is up they can’t work for State or Federal for at least 30 years. As an example, too often will someone work for 8 years, go to the private sector for 8 years then go back somewhere else for another 8 years with the private sector’s agenda and kickbacks. This does pose other issues such as business continuity and creates challenges but I would rather it not become organized crime again.

Ive written on this as well, we need a limit that can only be overuled by a high majority vote by the people. 2 terms and youre out unless a majority of 80% of your constituents vote to increase your stay. It allows true politicians who care for their people while also removing those in it for themselves.

It keeps the best options for the people.

For all government contracts related to past or current members.

No lobbying of any company, individual or any of the like while/after serving as a member of Congress. After serving all members must agree to an individual audit as the sec requires of advisors. All members must be held accountable for there activities dealing with the government.

The issue you will have by shortening terms is two fold. 1. It’s really going to screw up midterms. 2. It still doesn’t address the real problem with the senate.

The senate was NEVER supposed to be elected. It was to be appointed by the states so that a simple majority of the state house could recall their senators of they thought they weren’t representing the state.

2 terms at each level of government as well. Keep term lengths the same though.

We need to prevent these positions from becoming a career. Fresh ideas and less monetary gain would come from term limits.

This is the way. Five terms for Representatives, two for Senators. It gives both Representatives and Senators long enough in Congress to do something of value without having them there so long that they’re guaranteed to fight off any challenge simply by being the incumbent.

Agreed. Term limits must be imposed by a Convention of the States. 19 out of the necessary 34 have already requested. www.ConventionofStates.com

How does this happen when the ones that are given the term limits are the ones that also vote on giving themselves term limits. It’s like asking them not to vote for themselves a raise.

I see that Pelosi has been -

February 27, 1981 – April 3, 1983 | Chair of the California Democratic Party
Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from California - Incumbent
5th district (1987–1993)
8th district (1993–2013)
12th district (2013–2023)
11th district (2023–present)

January 15, 2002 – January 3, 2003 | House Minority Whip
January 3, 2003 – January 3, 2007 | House Minority Leader
January 4, 2007 – January 3, 2011 | Speaker of the US House of Representatives
January 3, 2003 – January 3, 2023 | Leader of the House Democratic Caucus

So based on this sample above, and considering the duration a person can be involved in decision-making that affects the American citizens lives, I feel we should set terms for Local/State/Senate - to a limited term of 8 years regardless of how they choose to serve.

Then they can do 8 on a federal / higher level - so like head of DHS, of FEMA, etc. Directors / OR president / majority leader / minority leader/ speak of the house, etc

This is a very basic sample, but im sure there are many other positions that would probably exclude of be better suited to not have term limits, but I feel since there is so much power one person could have (MAYORKAS) we should not allow an old VP to become head of DHS, for example(Kamala), lol! Thanks for any additional thoughts, and any further details you all can provide!

The issues with term limits is that special interests and corruption will continue and under term limits that corruption and special interests are going to be worse. The only reason why people like Thomas Massie and Rand Paul are impactful is because they have experience, and without that experience much of our guys won’t be able to legislate. And all the consultants, and staffers of Nancy Pelosi and the swamp are just going to replace their bosses

I’m sure someone else has already pointed out the misspelling of “Representatives”. You might want to fix that. In general, term limits is a great idea. I don’t know what you mean by “Minimum two terms”. One must be re-elected to serve a second term. I think two 6-year terms max for Senate, four 2-year terms max for House.

I went homeless in Washington and each Rep was completely unreachable, I didn’t have a permanent address, making it even harder. Had to move back to my parents in California, on food stamps, these old Representatives don’t care about us

Absolutely NOT. The power needs to be with the people with so many legislatures so corrupt today.

No more than 2 terms consecutive. Sit out one or two terms and IF wanna run again, have to win. No lifelong benefits regardless of terms served.

While I fully support term limits, I would propose an option that allows exceptional individuals to serve longer by holding a combination of offices. For example:

Representatives: 2-year terms; max 3 terms; max 6 years of service
Senators: 3-year terms; max 2 terms; max 6 years of service
President: 4-year terms; max 2 terms; max 8 years of service

This means that if it were the will of the people, one person could serve as Representative for 6 years, Senator for 6 years, Vice President for 8 years, and President for 8 years for a total of 28 years in the federal government.

If someone wants to be a public servant outside of that, then they need to commit any additional years of service at the local or state level.

The entrenchment of individuals at the federal level needs to end. There are people who have held federal offices for longer than I have been alive.

I also fully support some level of testing to maintain office after a certain age. If senior citizens have to have re-examinations to maintain their driver’s license to ensure that their driving doesn’t make them a danger to themselves or others, then it’s insane that public officials who have sway over the fate of our nation are not held to a similar standard. I feel this should apply to all individuals in the federal government regardless of branch or office held, and I would consider this a viable alternative to instating age limits.

This is what we need!

As well as term limits…we the people should vote for their raises.

I agree but there does also need to be continuity. I think 10 years isn’t enough, but 30+ is too much.

Perhaps “consecutive terms” should be limited rather than a blanket restriction of number of terms. “Term limits” sounds like a great idea on the surface, but there are negatives associated with it.
For one, the historical dialogue and experience in the chamber will be lost to the rapidly changing issues of the day.
Two, we could be depriving a constituency from their best representation if the limit comes at a strategic decision point such as treaty ratification or final consideration for a massive economic project (read Keystone Pipeline, border wall, the Iran nuclear deal).
Your point regarding Senate appointment from state legislatures is a potently salient one.
