Companies have been getting out of control with not allowing us the right to repair our own stuff. Farmers for example are forced to use John Deere to get their tractors repaired. Some Auto manufacturers make it impossible for another company to manufacture their vehicles body parts because of the “design patient” that they file. So they get to raise the price of these parts as much as they want because they control the supply & manufacturing. Right to repair things we purchase without companies hiding behind the legal loop hole of “well they purchased the equipment or vehicle not the software” is BS. This should not be allowed.

Too many companies are enforcing that any item bought in the store from televisions to vehicles to phones and many more are being locked behind software by companies who don’t want the consumer who purchased the product to repair the product if something breaks. Especially with products no longer supported. Where companies do everything in their power to remove any way to purchase parts or make a repair. In the case of Samsung and Apple phones multiple times both companies were found to update t…
The days of the shade tree mechanic are gone. Due to technological advances our vehicles (personal or industrial) have more electronic sensors and parts on them now, that cannot be easily diagnosed and repaired. Companies (mainly on the agricultural side ), like John Deere, retain property rights on all diagnostic programs for any and all equipment they sell. Sometimes companies and farms have to wait weeks for a dealership to send out a technician with the proper computer and computer program j…
Companies are making it more and more difficult to “own” what you buy and part of that is making it hard if not impossible to get the information and tools to fix your own things, putting people at the behest of these companies. Remember when appliances used come come with comprehensive manuals and parts lists and if you wanted to you could fix it yourself with parts and tools and schematics that were easy to get a hold of? That was only a few decades ago.
Also consider how much unnecessary was…
Here are three policies that are somewhat interlinked but will be crucial when tech makes its way into every aspect of daily living.
Policy 1:
All home appliances that connect to the internet should be required to have compatibility with the Matter protocol if sold in the USA. The Matter protocol in specific allows appliances to communicate with each other and other devices like phones and screens, even when Internet access (but not the router) is down. This prevents ALL companies selling IOT-…
