Revised Military Draft

Basic training for everyone ages 18 to 25. After basic training, a choice of military service or civil service for the remainder of their service.
Civil service could include child care for parents of others in active duty assignments. This ensures that mothers and children are not separated due to the service to their country. There are lots of other public service opportunities available.
This idea also ensures that inductees are literate. Teaches history, discipline, how to get along in community, teamwork. Gives opportunities for advancement and on-the-job training.
When the term of service is completed, all are eligible for the GI bill for continued education. Eligible for veterans benefits including health care and home loans.
Initial opposition would be intense, but in my opinion, the long-term benefits outweigh the nay sayers.
