Student teaching is a key experience for new educational professionals, yet it is one of the last required internships to be unpaid or have no income stipend attached. Most students and working professionals are unable to take 4-6 months off of paid work to do a full time job with all required duties for free. Districts or colleges should provide some form of income reimbursement for hours worked. This would also assist in retention of new teachers as less students would be required to drop out of teacher prep programs due to an expected lack of income.
