End the FLSA Teacher Exclusion

Teachers are expected to work significantly long hours and are not compensated since they are excluded from the FLSA. A recent report from the RAND Corporation found that 25% of the hours teachers work go without compensation. During the 2022–2023 school year, teachers worked more hours per week, on average, than other working adults — 53 hours compared with 46. Other professions exempt from FLSA are doctors and lawyers, who make double the salary of a teacher. Some may not be aware, but for a bachelor level teacher to make 50,000 a year, in some school districts, they would need to work 10 years. Teachers are the backbone of our country, and for 44% of public school teachers earning less than the proposed salary threshold needs to change.
