In order to become an active duty police officer, all candidates must complete at least two years of law education and/or a more extensive “classroom instruction”. This education is intended to provide officers with a strong understanding of legal principles and procedures relevant to their duties. Additionally, all police officers must undergo annual fitness tests to ensure that they are in good physical condition and capable of performing the physical demands of their job effectively. These tests are designed to assess an officer’s overall physical fitness and ensure they can meet law enforcement work’s physical demands.

I suggest adding for new hires:
Requirement of previous experience (length of time tbd) actively employed or volunteering in a public or nonprofit position prior to applying for work as a police officer.
And/or mandatory first year or more at hiring, spent in a position that does not require/allow to carry handguns within the police department.
These might help to deter anyone from pursuing a police officer position based on the desire for power or control over others or racist motivations. Also, would give the employer a good history to judge their character and interactions with the public.
