Research companies fund scientific research and collect all the profits from the scientific research they invent. Virtually all patents and income derived from them in this domain become company property.
Currently, academics and universities are granted exclusive rights to the patents on their research that is FEDERALLY FUNDED and many professors go on to form companies based on this research.
We the people should get a share of the profits generated by research that was paid for by the general public.
It is also very tough for young, promising researchers to break into the ranks of those obtaining research grants. I propose that 10% of money made from the licensing of patents go into a fund dedicated to young scientists to deliver new and promising technology of the future. Others have proposed a crowd-sourced ranking system for federally funded research. This should be included as well.
