Women should be allowed at least a Federal 6 month paid Maternity Leave. 6-8 weeks unpaid is not enough time to recover mentally while caring for our babies.

I don’t have any kids of my own but I think 6-8 weeks unpaid is absolutely ridiculous. US is one of the 5 countries that offer no federal compensation. Our health and mental care is a joke. 6 month paid leave is not too much to ask for! There’s many countries that allow longer.

I would like to support this but I don’t see how this would work from a business perspective. Take Walmart for example with 2+ million employees. If they have 10,000 or more of their female employees in a years’ time go on maternity leave they’re on the payroll, on the tax roll, insurance etc. but not earning money for the company for that 6 months, how do they replace the loss in production, handle the increased labor on the other employees and other issues? It’s not unusual for especially younger women to get pregnant again, soon after previously giving birth, sometimes just to keep ages close together (I get that) but then maternity leave starts all over again. And if men are given the same time, the total loss of employees doubles from 10,000 to 20,000. Add to that that this is expected to be paid time off. Multiply 6 months times 20,000 employees equals 120,000 months of combined lost work time. Even at 75% of average full time hours, that 120,000 months would be at $1,800 per person, per month who is not at work not including employer-funded tax or insurance liability. I just don’t see how this could be feasible as a long term thing.
