Gradual assistance reduction

The government assistance programs need to be geared toward getting people out not keeping them in. If someone receiving welfare, food assistance, SSDI, etc goes over their monthly earned income by $0.05 they lose $100’s in assistance for month(s). This gives no one incentive to better their station in life. My suggestion would be a gradual reduction to allow people to take a raise of $100 a month without losing most or all the benefits immediately. There should also be no penalty for trying to save money or have a needed ‘luxury’ item. I was told my assets were too high to qualify. At the time my only asset was a 6 year old car. It was suggested I sell my car if I wanted the assistance. One needs $5,000 to open a personal retirement account. But if one has any money in savings it counts against you. So if they can’t save for retirement they will have to go on assistance when they retire. It seems everything about government assistance is specifically geared to keep people on assistance
