Allow homeless veterans to live on a decommissioned military base

Choose a military base in each region then allow homeless veterans to live on base. If a decommissioned base, keep services such as the commissary, exchange and medical facilities. Provide power and water and allow the veteran to live in on base housing.

This would provide the homeless veteran with a familiar framework for living. It would make good use of unused military housing, and make it easier to provide the homeless veteran with needed support.

I love this idea! Very thoughtful, & on this Veterans Day I truly appreciate seeing it proposed! Finally veterans would be around people who go through some of the same issues, & be able to better help eachother through scars that most of the public could never understand. We need to help those so deserving, while keeping their dignity at the same time. This would be a great investment in those brave souls which we truly owe everything to.

Some places use to have off base campus housing for Military. I remember living close to a couple of those during my childhood. I don’t think they’re still a thing. But should be brought back for military members past and present.

The following proposal was submitted at the my Iowa caucus for three cycles. I am so happy to see others like the idea, too.

NO MORE HOMELESS VETERANS

Problem : Homeless veterans of all ages urgently need intervention. They need additional services in a structured environment.

Objective: To provide support that veterans need to successfully re-enter civilian life, using a familiar military environment.

Method :

  • Repurpose a currently closed military base for housing and services.
  • Create a military environment to provide structure.
  • Install retired or volunteer military personnel to provide services.
  • Provide services to meet the individual needs of veterans. Those services would be beyond the scope of the Veterans’ Administration, and could be provided by retired veterans who have the requisite skills and who would like to continue in a military environment.
  • Provide transitional services to assist veterans in updating job skills, finding employment, restoring relationships, and locating accessible housing.
  • To provide on-site substance abuse rehabilitation.
  • To provide additional rehabilitation for seriously wounded veterans.
  • To provide on base housing for families while veterans are receiving critical rehabilitation.
  • To restore hope, confidence and lost potential.

Result :

At-risk veterans will receive services in a familiar environment enabling successful transition to civilian life. Communities near the base will benefit economically, and our country will benefit from the contributions of these veterans.

NO VETERAN SHOULD EVER BE HOMELESS!
