An SSDI recipient already does not have livable wage if rents or has house payment. If under 65 they do not offer the discounted supplemental insurance which is needed for obvious disabilty status and ongoing medical issues. They make you pay about $800 or more for supplement policy on top of already paid mandatory Medicare basic policy. If you do not have a spouse with insurance to cover you or they are between jobs, lost job, injured… you are left to go without as can’t afford to live on already low monthly SSDI.
I personally had this occur during a spouse in between jobs, was on a long flight and developed blood clot in leg, but wouldn’t go in due to financial hardship/ NO supplemental insurance due to high cost of $800/mo. I’m lucky to still be here. No one should have to choose between No full insurance coverage on disability.
