All 19 year old Americans should serve one year for our country

Require 1 year of service for all 19 year olds in our country. This can be through the military, working with the homeless, cleaning up our country, working with National Park Service, working with schools on various projects, etc.

I think it should only be military, Either enlist in one of the 5 existing branches or a new 6th branch that would have to be created to deal with the bratty, out of shape, and America hating recruits that will have to be seriously trained by the drill seargents until they know where they live and what it means. It would essentially be one more year of high school with intense history, civics, physical fitness and weapons training. Maybe after the year we would get a bunch of 20 year olds that are ready to make America Great. And you could also give them the option to buy their way out of service and put that money directly towards the national debt.

DISGUSTING IDEA. This is the land of the FREE not COMMUNISM. Forcing someone to work in any field is un-American! Terrible idea. 19 year should be focused on college or their own path NOT serving the government! This site doesn’t even make sure ONLY AMERICANS ARE POSTING!!!

My child WILL NOT serve any mandatory 1 year of anything, yours can if you want to force it, I believe it’s time to revoke anyone’s citizenship that has communism ideas & deport them to a communist country where they will feel more at home.

Are you even American? This site needs to do a better job. ONLY AMERICANS WHO BELIEVE IN FREEDOM FOR ALL SHOULD BE MEMBERS. This is a BULLSHIT idea!

:us::heart::us:I see nothing wrong with a young person giving back to a country that is the land of the free. It would make them more responsible, make them “grow up” to see what is required of them as an adult. Then they can decide how to move forward, enter the military, go to college, trade school, etc. Sad to say, but to many young people stay in Moms basement and play video games, or do drugs because they don’t know what to do as a responsible adult

As a retired 1Sgt who came in the Army during the last days of the draft, I will state a few of my observations of both the all volunteer service and the draft.
First; A draft is not a bad idea for a minimum of at least 2 years, the advantages are it would take a diverse cross section of society and teach them about each other. Racial groups as well as social groups. The rich frat kids with the poverty raised kids. This cross association is a serious missing part of todays society and why nobody understands to opposing arguments. there is no common ground.
However I do oppose a draft, it often takes in unstable people who can not adapt and causes more problems than it would solve.
A volunteer program however in either federal service, military or civil service including non-profits could achieve the same integration as a draft and make the reward a paycheck and an opportunity to get federal assistance for college. No federal assistance for advanced education without service.

Something really needs to be done to drive the entitlement out of kids and teach them to be responsible for their actions and to understand their place in the world. Something that will tear them away from the brain rotting technology for a period so they can experience what it is to be alive and aware of your surroundings and learn life skills.

I don’t think mandatory military service is in any way a communist thing and it has been practiced in many countries that aren’t communist.

However, our military today seems to be a woke indoctrination camp so I would be loath to force anyone into it. When I served the Navy during the 00s it was already going downhill with Perform to Serve and other policies designed to purge the ranks of the most experienced and patriotic servicemen and women.
When asked to reenlist I said Hell no!

But today’s kids need something to light a fire under their butts. Some kind of wake up call to force them to shape up.

I would tweak this just slightly by making it 18-25 or something like that just to give a little more flexibility. Some young individuals may need to be there for their parents. Giving them more time to figure things out and arrange things for their parents would be helpful and with this extra flexibility, you may even be able to increase the service to 2 years. I think the other options you listed would be great too, but I am mainly for a mandatory military service.

As a 19-year-old, I completely agree. I almost joined the military, but was encouraged by my family to study instead, and as a very skinny girl that struggles with gaining muscle, I thought that it would be wiser for me to take the education route. Nonetheless, I think it’s very beneficial to one’s character and exactly what America needs right now. We would have a lot more REAL men who are disciplined and good leaders if we made military service mandatory.

I think this would be very beneficial to America. The culture right now is shit, and this generation is ungrateful, undisciplined, and overly sensitive. If we made military service mandatory, we wouldn’t have so many useless people in our society playing video games 24/7. Maybe if we did this, we’d have some REAL men in society who know discipline, leadership, and teamwork as well as have love for their country. We need to get the degenerates off their asses.

I joined the Navy at the age of 31. That’s their upper age limit for recruits.
At the time I was very skinny and out of shape. I was told by everyone that I would wash out of basic. It was tough at that age trying to keep up with energetic 18 y/o kids fresh from HS. But after awhile I did it. I failed my first two PRTs but hit the final one out of the ballpark.

I learned a good lesson about myself and my abilities. And for a 53 y/o I have a pretty good physique compared to others my age. I learned the value of keeping my body healthy.

Point of the story is that you can always enter the service later in life like me. Each branch has a diferent cutoff age so be mindful of that.
If you join up after college you will qualify for a higher starting rank or even have the possibility of being an officer.
Just some food for thought. Good luck with your studies and keep your nose to the grindstone!

I believe one reason our universities are destroying our American culture and radicalizing our young people is the lack of maturity today. Yes, a few are focused and driven to become a productive member of our society but many are just along for the ride. “Rebel without a cause” as my grandmother used to call them. Sending a teenager with no goals away to school is a waste of time & money. I think community service for a year or two prior to college is an excellent way to help young people get a bit of maturity, and experience life as an adult prior to choosing a career. The trick here is to make it worthwhile for the young person. Two years of successful service pay for 2 years of trade school or college. They would be more mature and more likely to do well school having EARNED it. Military service would be the easiest, but other types of community service could be established. Yes, military already has educational reinbursement but it only helps, not funds college. I am thinking eliminate all college loans and replace with earned higher education money.
