Traffic light timers

Many countries have timers on their stoplights. Why doesn’t the United States?

Stoplight timers, often seen as countdown displays at traffic signals, can improve several aspects of traffic management and road safety:

  1. Traffic Flow Efficiency

Drivers’ anticipation: Countdown timers allow drivers to anticipate the signal change, reducing reaction time and improving traffic flow when lights turn green.

Smoother stops: Drivers can plan their deceleration when approaching a red light, minimizing abrupt braking.

  1. Safety

Reduces accidents: Timers help reduce accidents caused by last-minute decisions, such as whether to stop or speed through a yellow light.

Pedestrian safety: Pedestrian timers allow walkers to judge whether they have enough time to cross safely.

  1. Driver Stress Reduction

Timers reduce the uncertainty of waiting at a signal, lowering stress for drivers and passengers.

  1. Fuel Efficiency and Emissions

Engine management: Knowing the duration of a red light can encourage drivers to turn off their engines, reducing idling time, saving fuel, and lowering emissions.

  1. Pedestrian Confidence

Timers for crosswalks give pedestrians clear information about how much time they have to cross, enhancing safety and convenience.

  1. Compliance with Signals

Timers encourage better adherence to traffic rules since drivers are more informed about when the light will change, reducing risky behavior like running yellow or red lights.

In summary, stoplight timers promote smoother, safer, and more efficient traffic interactions while reducing environmental impact and stress for road users.

only works with driving culture (your reference to “many other countries”), which was eliminated (in the cities anyway) in nowadays America

You don’t believe “driving culture” would change? People already step on the gas when it hits yellow trying to beat it. Most people don’t understand the current timing as is. Why not give them an indicator to give better decision making? It won’t fix it for everyone but it sure would help many others as stated in this proposal.

to change the driving culture altogether it all should start with schools, where kids explained right from wrong, and families, where they can see their parents actually doing it the right way…
the counters alone won’t do anything (but maybe increase the number of mentioned by you people stepping on gas when they see the counter close to 0)
