Here is my proposal. Since, currently, members of the House of Representatives are up for re-election every 2 years ( which means they will be spending the second year campaigning to get re-elected, wasting a year of service), I propose that elected officials serve 6 year terms, with the possibility of being re-elected for an additional 6 years for a total of 12 years maximum service. This would apply to both houses of congress as well as the Presidency. We would elect 1/3 of congress every two years, so that there would always be seasoned members serving. Six year terms would be more than sufficient for us to determine if the elected official, whether that be the President, a Senator or a member of the House, should be elected for the second term. They would be subject to sensure or recall or empeachment for actions detrimental to the their duty to serve the peopleās interests.
The problem with this idea is you open floodgates to other amendments being legally removed.
This is an absolute must. We have always been told that āterm limitsā are already embedded into our system, you just vote them out. Not so! With so much SuperPAC funding, private funding by elites such as George Soros, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey and a host of others; they are able to sustain those who are in power and do ātheirā bidding. It is in ātheirā interest in keeping the corrupt politicians in power. We need term limits so that we get honest people in that are there āFor The Peopleā. Congressional representatives was never meant to be a lifetime job!
I would propose or add that any member of government and their direct family members are to abstain from participating in any insider trading practices and acceptance of any donations monetary or otherwise during their tenure is to be deemed a conflict of interest and should be seized and applied toward paying down national debt. Should they be proven guilty in any of these instances shall be considered treason and punishable by a minimum of 20yr to life sentence.
āWe The Peopleā demand that all Washington DC āpoliticiansā acknowledge and consent to TERM AND AGE LIMITSā¦NOW !!!
God Bless America !!!
Fully support, but recommend the Convention of States policy instead. It is aimed at term limits, but also balanced budget and adding specified areas where the federal government will be prohibited from control. Enumerated powers have not constrained government expansion as they should HAD THEY BEEN FOLLOWED AS INTENDED!
There should be a provision that any malfeasance can get the rep or Senator removed regardless of hitting a minimum number of terms or not. A fifty year political career is one thing but dirty slime that tricked their way in also need to go before they entrench with cronies.
I kindly disagree. I think everyone should follow the same term limits as Presidents. This will keep everything fresh and get rid of the bad apples
Good policy proposal, and I agree (also voted), but I think thereās a more comprehensive solution here. Please read Mark Mecklerās Policy Proposal (currently ranked 6th) for calling a Convention of States. Itās legal (look it up in Article V of our Constitution) as well as the most powerful way to enact this change. Thanks and God bless! ā Ethan
Very fascinating idea; one Iāve also pondered back in the days when I was debating topics with fellow COS volunteers during volunteering with them. So your idea encompasses a personās total career time in public service/office, correct? Assuming it is, I think itās a fascinating idea, though jurisdiction between local/state/federal policy limitations would likely cause friction between concurrent policies.
I personally donāt have a problem with any one person serving terms between any level of government service, however it is pursuant to the limits imposed by the laws of that office/position, and if it is important to the constituents of said office would like to impose a ācareer term limitā then the mechanisms are already in-place to have it amended into the appropriate due process given by jurisdictional law.

Representatives have two-year terms. Almost as soon as they get elected, they have to start their reelection campaign. That causes many of them to try to bring pork back to their districts. We need term limits. I used to think elections would take care of that, but obviously, they donāt because of all the corruption in Washington. Three terms for the House and two terms for the Senate are enough.
No minimum term. They can be removed even as a first term for malfeasance.
An Article 5 Convention will solve this problem
Congress was never meant to be a career job. It was meant to be a public service then go away and go back to your real job.
All of our founding fathers served then went back home to be attorneys, farmers or what everā¦
2-6 years congress then 4 yea4s senate go homeā¦
Ban former members from lobbyist,
Congress or their family members shall not trade in stocks while they serveā¦
We donāt have 10-20 years to wait!
Iām a little afraid of term limits. Yes it will get rid of crooked and ineffective politicians but it result in the loss of valuable ones, too. Do we really want a whole new crop of Congressmen who barely understand civics?
The only issue I have with this topic is: If we actually get a good politician, I for one would like to keep them working for the people for the right reasons. It seems to me that the real problem is money and honesty, not the amount of time they spend in DC.
This policy is included in the Call a Convention of the States to Limit the Scope, Power and Jurisdiction of the Federal Government policy. Please vote for that one as well if you agree with this one.
I would add that those who have served their respective terms not be employed with a business or institution doing business with the Federal Government for a period of āXā years. This would stop those leaving office the ability to immediately parlay this into a lucrative career using their knowledge and contacts as a public servant for financial gain.
I would also like to see that those stocks owned by those in office could not be traded. No buying or selling of stocks owned and/or controlled by you. A public servant shouldnāt leave office a millionaire. No one else with a .mil or .gov email doesā¦
Agreed. The problem with term limits for elected officials is that unelected bureaucrats stay in position MUCH, much longer, technically running the federal government with no oversight, as evidenced by the current administration.
