Term limits for Senators and Representatives

Yeah, but… who would have to vote this into law? The same people that you are seeking to limit their power. This will never change until the "Checks and balances’ are no longer in cahoots.

I believe 6-8 years should be the term limit for anyone in congress or senate! Definitely less than a president! They get too corrupt and high and mighty. While “we the people” continue to pay for them to get rich while we struggle. Their PAY needs reexamined also! There’s no reason for them to be paid so much! Their pay was upped and upped to prevent corruption but obviously that hasn’t helped. There should be a special unit that does a deep dive into anyone in the government a few times a year to look for corruption! Their finances, computers, phones etc.!

Term limits are long overdue for Congress and Senate. If it’s good for the President, it should apply to the Legislative Branch.

To ensure the passage of a term limits bill, it should include a provision that exempts current members of Congress, allowing them to be “grandfathered in” under the existing rules. This approach increases the likelihood of support from sitting lawmakers.

Absolutely a top issue. Our politicians have become so comfortable in their position and enjoy the money they are making from various sources - they no longer are representing the people who elected them.

another alternative idea which may dovetail nicely with term limits, is to prohibit office holders from campaigning for another term WHILE still holding office. it’s a HUGE time waster. not certain how it might fit into the term limits plan, but it’s worth thinking about. :sunglasses:

Exactly my issue. While I want this, it is currently impossible to get passed. The majority of politicians are not going to approve limiting their power. This is more of something that, long term wise, would only happen if people begin voting for senators and representatives who would agree with this and start asking people running for such positions what their stance is so it becomes an issue in the spotlight.

The swamp extends far beyond elected officials. We have unelected beurocrats in positions of power and in control of purse strings and bribes.

I think the idea of Senate term is to have continuity in the government without so much turnover as in the House. If we just limit them to 2 terms, they would know they HAVE to go back to contribute to society when they’re done. This keeps them in touch with citizens. Currently, they are disconnected with what average citizens contend with. They go into office broke and come out millionaires.

Also, I would be OK with them serving 2 terms, take a term off, and then IF the people want them back, they could vote them back in. This allows a sort of “checks and balances” with the newly elected representative that can provide insight as to how the incumbent did while they were in and expose nefarious details if applicable.

Plus I don’t think they should have lifelong benefits. Our military has to put in 20 years to earn theirs.

2 years max-Congress and Senate. As we have seen, a single Congressional representative or Senator can do a LOT of damage in just that amount of time

Let’s remember. Congress is a exclusive club. no matter what side your on. They don’t want any “outsiders” coming in and disrupting the way they do things. Hence “Trump”. He’s an outsider. It could have been anyone. But he is not a politician.
People are tired of the same old, same old. Democrats spend money, Republicans try to budget spending. I have seen this my whole life. Back and forth. The people lose. They think we are stupid and don’t remember, we do.
Term Limits are needed to continue our Constitutional Republic. What those terms are need to be discussed. We need term limits but have to consider consistency of our government policies and laws.

You present a very good rebutal, but how do we prevent the legislature from becoming a career?

Congress should be recused from this, as it directly affects them personally. Can this issue be put to popular vote to mandate a Constitutional Convention to amend and add term limits? That way the next Congress can’t just come in and repeal it.

Absolutely! 100 percent without question, we need Term Limits… There are some good suggestions for 2-3 terms House & Senate max. 6yrs.
The era of the career politician needs to end with Us.
Let’s put our heads together too about:

  • Reigning in the Lobbysts
  • Insider trading which should include Audits family-wide
  • Sensible Salaries
  • SINGLE ITEM BILLS

Agree! This will keep the Career Politicians out and turn it into a part time job for them. They should all hold a regular job and be subject to all of the laws and things that are put in place just as EVERYONE else.

Two problems with this: 1) Congressional term limits will only empower the unelected bureaucrats. 2) Requires a constitutional amendment which Congress will NEVER propose.
Solution: Put limits on both and propose through the states.
Good new! It’s already in progress: Call a Convention of the States to Limit the Scope, Power and Jurisdiction of the Federal Government
