once you rise above a certain pay grade in our federal government, you should have 4 more years and then you should be forced back into the private sector. This is theonly way to avoid swamp formation.
Amen
The Military have High-Year Tenure limitations, why don’t GSes?
And no more pay unless it’s retirement at retirement age.
My concern is what roles this applies to. Previously I worked in a lab for the USDA ARS. My boss was a PhD in a niche industry. His studies were long and frequent. If he hit that certain level forcing him out wouldn’t help the studies and it can be really hard to find someone to replace them anyway. Did you have further clarification on this?
Yes!
I like the thought of term limits for elected and appointed positions within the leadership ranks in government, but when you think of much of the rank and file, this could make career progressions and meritocracy a moot point. Having to consistently retrain replacements in the workforce while also losing valuable experience could also hurt the country more than help. I would see this working well focused on key positions where tenure or strangleholds that push a partisan ideology could be damaging or where the results simply are not productive towards the needs of the position.
Good intention but this would just result in federal employees doing favors for industry and then going directly to industry. It would be more effective to eliminate positions above a certain pay grade that make up the layers upon layers of bureaucracy at each agency.
I agree, if rational exceptions like this are addressed.
Let’s maybe start more narrowly, and set term limits on the Congress and Senate first. These decision makers that have served for more than 10 years should be released from their service.
I note a number of policies suggesting term limits for Congress and Senate.
But of all term limit policies this one is the most critical.
Unelected DC bureaucrats run the country. The politicians are there for the facade of running it.
I also think the Supreme Court appointments shoukd be for a certain number of years, NOT lifetime. If a justice does a grest job, they could be re-appointed, but would need to go through another confirmation process. The primary requirement should be how well they comprehend the Constitution and Founding Documents so they are able to do the job effectively.
This is exactly what Ive been saying for 300 year now. As a retired Veteran who knew those regulations, it sure would be hard to implement.
I completely agree. Having briefly worked for a congresswoman years ago it was easy to see how staffers and other government employees think they are part of the “elite”. All these folks running the country don’t even have to walk on the sidewalk in DC, they use the underground tunnels to get one place to the other, eat in their own restaurants removed from the people and never have to interact with anyone not in their bubble. It is so easy to see how they are completely disconnected from We the People. The culture of the federal government is clearly bad and perpetuates these folks being disconnected from reality.
We should vastly reduce the government too. We have so many unnecessary departments.
Usually there are exceptions to every rule. I see no reason not to use it for this as well. BUT, very few exception to this rule.
Term limits should apply to senators and congress people.
