Restore Home Economics to schools, with a new emphasis on healthy lifestyles, as part of a program to teach students the life skills that are sorely lacking in many young adults.
Children spend a full work-week in school all their young lives and many graduate without knowledge of how to care for themselves in the most basic ways.
Cooking, caring for a home, budgeting and banking, simple home and auto repairs, etc. are real life that will confront every student, whether they choose to go to college or straight into the economy.
Going into adult life with these skills in place will create independence and confidence and foster the kind of real-time problem solving that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
I believe making progress here can operate for social rehabilitation on a magnitude that is currently being underestimated.

Parenting skills is a top life skill that I think should be included.
I personally propose that we have a law that in order to get federal funding, high schools must make a graduation requirement and colleges make an admission requirement students must first pass an awareness class, taught by a non-school, non-teacher union, non-ideological, independent contractor, using a transparent curriculum available to the public online, regarding:
-what abortion procedures are really like
-fetal & child development
-all the resources available to low income moms
-basic parenting skills & perspectives from moms about what motherhood is really like and its challenges and rewards
-primary attachment theory
-physical/psychological risks & experiences of pregnancy and abortion
-the causes & harmful effects of toxic stress against pregnant moms and our babies
-the harms of absent fatherhood
-awareness about all forms of abuse, including narcissistic abuse, economic abuse and coercive control
-awareness about all forms of, and the harms of, exploitation of women’s bodies, all forms of sexual coercion, pregnancy coercion, abortion coercion and our “player culture”
-biological sex differences between men and women
-adoption awareness, especially for children with Down Syndrome
-perspectives and experiences from children and parents about the causes, challenges, rewards and parenting/child-care strategies for various disabilities and learning disorders, especially for Down Syndrome, Autism & ADHD

Also, critical thinking and conflict resolution skills. Oh, and meditation. Many school systems around the world teach it.
I think they need to teach basic accounting, credit and how to file your taxes, pay bills. Things to get them started in life.
Revamp the whole education system and find a system to push Americans pass any other nations education!

I learnt how to measure food out and work an oven/microwave and to clean dishes/do laundry/and knit in school. The guys did it too…then we also all learnt how to use tools like screw drivers, harmers, and flat heads.
Ive had family friends that say in europe they have their lunch period thats actually a class on food; that discusses healthy portion, dietary fiber from fruits/vegetables/beans and they cook then eat. That they focus on the enjoyment food brings while nourishing the body. We in the USA focus on go go go, and utilize lunch as extra time for other things, socializing, and poor food choices/rapid eating.
Rapid eating or storm eating is when we eat so quickly we dont consider how enjoyable it is to eat our meal, and we forget how much we eat and what we eat. Unfortunately, our childrens model solely encourages them to storm eat likely over processed meals.
I very much agree with this. As well as adding gardening and edible wild plants.
Whereas I didn’t have to do chores at home and learned nothing useful in school (I do remember what Alexander the Great named his horse, tho ) and you wouldn’t believe what I mess I was when I got married and had to start doing stuff Trust me, this topic comes from my heart! Gardening, YES! I did think a bit about foraging re: plant medicine but then I thought of the mushrooms and the lawsuits and decided to axe that part But gardening

Destigmatize HomeEc by allowing half-day apprentice programs. If a kid wants to apprentice early and have a job out of high school, there should be a way to do work-release. Most of the 8 hr school day is busy work or fluff: provide real-world options for kids to learn skills.
Allow them to apprentice in family businesses as well as non-family ones.
There is, I can testify! I taught a survival class to 2-6th graders at our homeschool co-op and I mean to tell you, I sweated blood planning out the food days for that class. But it wasn’t just being sued, to be fair. We’re in the mountains and a lot of those children live only feet away from the forests so I was terrified of being wrong, in case they really needed or just tried to experiment with what I taught them and were hurt. I have a lot of children so I sort of specialize in anxiously trying to keep people from eating things that will kill them

I like this - are you referencing the skills (career centers) ? Where I live they have these for juniors and seniors of highschool…not sure how theyre applied but where I went to highschool they had one there too…kids could apply and complete schooling there if they intended to be an electrician or plumber for example.
I came to this thread to say the same thing! We need to teach our children basic real-life day-to-day skills in school, things that they will need once they’re out of school. This includes how to cook for themselves, health and hygiene, manage their money, how taxes work, explain mortgages/interest rates, explain car, house, property insurance, budget for a household…etc I try to teach my children such skills at home, but most times both parents are working and do not have the time to do so.
More hands-on education! My son recently went with the Forestry Club and helped with evasive species and he was thrilled. He thought it was very interesting and loved that he got to get in the river and help. Bring back more job shadowing for these kids. Show them what it’s like to be in a line of work.

I totally agree with this policy. Every student should have some basic life skills. Also, I think a basic anatomy/physiology course should be required so that all students understand to some degree how their body operates and what it takes to care for it.
I’d add to that…HUMAN ATANOMY COLLEGE LEVEL BY GRADE 11, HOW TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY HOMEOSTASIS IN A HUMAN BODY, HOLISTIC CARE, ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES WE ALL CARE ABOUT, HUSBANDRY, BASKET WEAVING, SECOND OR THIRD LANGUAGE, STRETCHING BETQEEN CLASSES, TRANSENDENTAL MEDITATION, FRENCH COOKING, END OF LIFE CARE, HOW TO LAND A JOB IN A NEW QORLD, WILDLIFE CARE AND MAINTENANCE, FARMING AND…THIS LIST GOES ON. AND QXPANDS

Great idea i took home economics and woodshop in jr high and high school. I think for sure programs need up grading as well. Ones that focus on tech, communication skills, that offer course’s in empathy, compassion, integrity, charity, equality, and common sense. To name a few. Tailored lasses that ment to nurture and focus on kids talents dreams and aspirations from the yongest of ages. Maybe creating a committee of analysts to review national school stats then, proposing, voteing , and eliminating classes that don’t work and creating new classes more suitable for the evolving world.
