My back of a paper napkin idea.
If solar is going to be apart of the energy grid, and if it’s going to be subsidized, why not fund directly to businesses and homeowners to install on rooftops of every building that would be eligible? Avoid (outlaw?) clear cutting of forested lands when real estate (no pun intended) is handily available?
Every homeowner and business with solar on their roof would be their own power plant. They could sell excess energy back to the grid. It would, I’d assume, reduce demand on baseload energy during daylight hours.
If/when battery technology improves use abandoned factories and production centers as new sites for energy storage facilities.
