I propose soil sequestration practices to be implemented in farming in the US. Doing so would improve overall soil health which would result in reduced chemical fertilizer use, increased resistance to flooding and drought, reverse desertification and erosion, sequester carbon, improve food security, and strengthen ecosystems.
Some ways soil sequestration can be implemented are:
- Minimizing soil disturbances, low-til or no-til
- Rotational grazing with livestock
- Crop rotation
- Row cropping
- Composting
Without proper land management, we deplete our resources. Soil erosion causes food insecurity, as well as financial strain on farmers and tax payers.
The government currently encourages and promotes these practices, however, I feel it is a policy that should be practiced regularly by all (or most) farmers.
