This is a great question, Brett. I agree that current SSI amounts are not even close to enough to live on. Even if a person on disability finds a job that can accommodate them, they cannot earn enough money to live on without being permanently kicked off disability. This causes people to give up trying at all.
I have submitted a proposal to increase the assets allowed to reflect today’s cost of living (needs to be more than $2000). Also, proposed a safety net to allow a person to work and earn income with the promise that they can get back on the disability immediately if they lose their job. I think this would be life-changing for many people. You can vote if you like it here:
