Most of the abuses of the People’s Constitutional Rights under the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments can be traced to the excessive empowerment of federal law enforcement enabled by the Patriot and Homeland Security Acts. In response to the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Congress and President George W. Bush enacted laws that have led to abuses such as designating parents protesting school board decisions terrorists, placing informants into Catholic parishes, persecuting of political opponents, and spying on private citizens. This must stop now; the Acts were an over-reaction and have caused more damage to our Republic than any terrorist could ever hope to achieve. The Acts should be repealed and reformed in a way that protects Constitutional rights by tightly constraining federal law enforcement and the domestic use of intelligence operations.
