I wholeheartedly agree with the need to repeal and abolish the PATRIOT Act and its related legislation. The rights of Americans were meant to be inviolable, and over time, we have seen these rights eroded in the name of national security. While the intent behind the PATRIOT Act was to protect citizens from terrorism, the scope of its provisions has far exceeded its original purpose, infringing on essential freedoms and creating a surveillance state that undermines the very principles this country was founded upon.
The balance between national security and personal freedoms must always be carefully maintained, but the overreach of laws like the PATRIOT Act has created a chilling effect, where citizens are under constant surveillance, and their private communications can be intercepted without proper due process. This undermines the trust between the government and the people it is meant to serve, and it has led to widespread violations of privacy, free speech, and constitutional rights.
To truly restore the rights of Americans, a full repeal of the PATRIOT Act is necessary. However, we must not only revoke this legislation but also create a new, more balanced framework for national security that upholds the civil liberties of all citizens. A proposed change should include:
Reaffirmation of Constitutional Rights: We must reaffirm the inviolability of personal freedoms, ensuring that the Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures are restored to their full extent.
Transparency in Surveillance: The government must be transparent about the use of surveillance programs, providing clear oversight to ensure they are narrowly tailored to specific threats and not used as a blanket tool to monitor law-abiding citizens.
Strengthened Due Process: Any actions that infringe upon individual rights should require a court order based on probable cause. This means that surveillance, data collection, or detainment must always involve judicial review to prevent abuses of power.
Public Accountability and Oversight: A system of independent oversight, such as an ombudsman or review board, should be established to monitor government activities related to surveillance and national security. This would ensure that any actions taken in the name of security are always scrutinized for their impact on civil liberties.
Restoration of Privacy Rights: Privacy should be recognized as a fundamental human right, and any future legislation or surveillance programs must be limited to avoid unwarranted invasions of privacy.
By repealing the PATRIOT Act and enacting these changes, we can return to a government that operates within the boundaries set by the Constitution, respecting the rights and freedoms of all individuals. The common people deserve a government that protects their civil liberties, not one that erodes them in the name of security. It’s time to reinstate the balance that allows both safety and freedom to thrive in equal measure.
Just like MOST laws they bury the rot among great portions of the laws they pass. That’s why they are enormous. We must repeal the whole to get rid of the unconstitutional anti-citizen portions and then they can pass a reformed law including the sections that are good. This need to be done to ALL laws past in the last 20 years likely. There is a huge amount of waste and ideological garbage that steals power and freedom from citizens that has nothing to do with the Title of the bills passed
I’m in high favor of abolishing this Deep State control forevermore. Our children and their children… should never be under this yoke.
We can make the future what our forefathers envisioned, a brand of Liberty and Freedom that’s currently foreign to us.
Remove the whole thing to make sure the bad parts are gone, then you can sign new laws to cover the parts that are still useful or needed if that’s the case.
The Patriot Act needs to be abolished and shame on the Republicans that vote to continually renew it. An intersting fact is that the act was changed overnight before the vote and none of congress read the changes before voting for it. So in essence congress voted for a different bill than they thought they were passing.
This request, although popular by vote, is not enough to address the fundamental issues which made its passage and extension possible, which requires us to address the root causes that gave rise to the government being coopted by industry and corporations at the expense of our bill of rights. Hence, these two proposals which address this issue head on to both rectify and remediate these usurpations.
Totally agree Abolish it. It’s ment to spy on American citizens. It had nothing to so with tracking terrorists. That’s how they twist things, and yes it is Uncontitutional.
No we don’t need that Montrosity either. It’s just another tool to add to there war chest. We abolish all so called federal law enforcement and put what we need under one umbrella. Screw all these 3 and 4 letter agencies. Same with our unhealthy health institutions. We don’t need several agencies for one single roll.
This should be the top priority to return privacy back to the People. This policy has given Agencies, Employers, and Everyday Citizens the ability to spy on all electronic devices without any accountability. Those who use these devices use them to harass, manipulate, and sabotage Peoples lives. They listen and monitor every conversation, text message and email. They track your GPS, WIFI, and Bluetooth. This all under the protection of this Policy.
